I wonder if some of these guys even know what they are shelling.

Anyone have good insight on how modern MLRS systems are aimed and launched? I assume satellite?
Even if they do know, this seems like an incredibly bad posture to announce. Even if it is going to be put into practice (which i can understand given the circumstances), by announcing it you just guaranteed not one artillery man is going to surrender to you from now on.

But they may think twice the next time they fire anything.

With all the talk of the Russian forces running out of food, here is (if any of you are interested) the food that Ukraine fuels its armed forces with.

(Disclaimer: It's a rather unnecessarily long watch from start to finish, and this guy geeks out HARD over military rations)

In the training FTX's at OBC (and afterward) I used to like showing people how to make "ranger pudding"
  • Crackers
  • Sugar packet
  • Water
  • cocoa packet

Stir and eat...

We hoarded the peanut butter as tradable items.

And though the four-fingers of death were horrible vienna wienies; they always came with the best snacks (M&Ms and lemon pound cake)

I think he's worried about a potential civil servant revolt. They get paid in rubles.

He may also have some sort of inkling of an attempt to seize power.

Worst case scenario, he does this citing security concerns about a foreign threat, then stages a mass casualty event inside of Russia.

Would be my fear. Kill a bunch of his own citizens, blame foreign threat, reunify average Russian, press magic button.

Does anyone have any info of non-weapon supplies streaming in the Ukraine? Food, fuel, medicine, etc. There better be a massive current flowing to the defenders, that can be reached, by now.

I liked the chilli mac, if I knew a bathroom facility was accessible. Otherwise I stuck to peanut butter and anything else that would stop me up on purpose. I remember all the rumors and never knew if any were true ( i.e. the gum was a laxative. Eating the match heads would put sulfur in your pores and keep away mosquitoes. )

I've seen news reports at the border with Poland, there is a tent city filled with supplies. When buses or trains full of refugees come in from Lviv, the supplies are loaded for the return trip. And the refugees are offered food and tea on the spot.

BRIC is not an alliance. It's a group of countries with growing economies that work together in some economic capacity.

Militarily, India and China are at odds. India recognizes the threat from China and have been engaging heavily with Australia, Japan, and the US. But right now they are still dependent on Russia for arms, equipment, spare parts, and service. They aren't going to openly critique them but they aren't supporting them either.

I've seen some Indian news articles on Twitter when Russia told them to pound sand when their students were (are? I've lost track) still there that would lead me to believe that there is a growing dissatisfaction with Russia to some degree.

However, I agree that the government won't say anything for awhile for the states obvious reasons. I think we talked about India's abstention on the security council on voting for the draft resolution and their ties economically and for defense about the same time.
India has sent at least 3 different C17s to theatre in the last 12 hours. Two to Romania and one to Poland. I suspect inbound with supplies and equipment and outbound with any of their citizens who made it out. All three planes departed India and returned India or are in the process thereof. They may have abstained and or aren't going public with their support for Ukraine.

Martial law seems intended to get ahead of protests. I doubt Putin was expecting the level of protesting they've already seen and it seems likely to get worse once the economic damage is realized and more actual casualty reports come in. That and parent realizing their kids are at war.

If I were an oligarch that had seen the value of my holdings drop by over 90% in a week or so, I would be doing everything in my power to get rid of Putin and beg the rest of the world to give Russia a chance to earn forgiveness. I just don't see any pathway out of this that doesn't end with all the money guys propping Putin up deciding to stop propping him up.

Man, I bought oil and gas stocks the day oil went negative. As someone in the OG industry, that was a doubling down move.

I can't bring myself to do that here. We know its going to bounce back in years, but we don't know in what form. These companies could go bankrupt and wipe you out before sanctions are lifted.

If Ukraine stalls the attacks and prevents a takeover I hope countries take note of how to fight a war that is not in your country. Let the country being attacked fight on their own but provide them with the supplies they need to win. We helped Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, and several other countries, within 20 years we would be fighting each of those countries.

After 6 weeks the Taliban was about to surrender to US special forces that were assisting local groups like the Norther Alliance. Once we brought in conventional forces like Russia did there we were done. Sending advisors and the like to Ukraine is the best way to go for everyone and would keep up distance from Russia saying we created an act of war by sending in troops
Kill the enemy, destroy their means to commit harm. Go HOME!

So is said uniformed combatants knowingly firing on civilians who are fleeing or have been told they're being provided safe passage (happening). Note, I'm not in support of either.

Gents, please calm down on the jabs and bickering.

RebelE makes a good point. The tweet said UA SoF would kill captured artillerymen. That is not acceptable, sorry.

I get it from the Ukrainian perspective, though. The urge to off the people who are shelling your countrymen, women, daughters, sons, and fellow brothers in arms, would be damned hard to swallow - VERY damned hard.

Now if the goal is to take no prisoners when assaulting fortified positions and gun emplacements - that's probably okay. But if they surrender and throw down their arms; it's a frustrating event, but ultimately there is only one right response.

Putting myself in UA shoes, if I had a family member killed by Russian artillery, I am not sure what my response would be (actually I am quite sure I'd likely rage-kill the sum*****es) but seeing an ORDER from military command to execute captured uniformed soldiers... that is no bueno.

Hope I am never in that situation...

The Russian artillerymen are committing war crimes. They would likely face execution in the ICC anyway.

US Special Forces had air support in Afghanistan. Advisors wouldn't/ don't have that assistance in Ukraine.

True. The list of people that have had regular access to him over the last two years is short. Like less than half a dozen.
