Thats the part that is really interesting to me.

Russia could be a great ally. They could have easily made peace with their neighbors and happily go on about supplying oil to everyone. But they can't help themselves. They have to seize land, and control military choke points that belong to other countries and take all for themselves.

Nobody in europe is going to launch an assault on Moscow in the ICBM era. Why does russia need buffer states? You have to pay transit fees for oil and gas to Ukraine? So? Put other pipelines in place and negotiate like everyone else has to. Ukraine has gas reserves? Who cares. The rest of the world also has gas reserves.

A whole host of global geopolitical headaches goes away if Russia just stopped acting like Russia.

And I think that is what the global elite are seeing and hoping for regime change.

Today is going to be a rough day. Russia will use more thermobaric weapons, shelling in Kharkiv, Maruipol (which is now surrounded) and Kyiv are going to be brutal. The fact that a week in that Kyiv and Kharkiv haven't fallen is astounding. The Russians are clearly having horrific supply issues up north. In the East they've been absolutely blunted by the regular army. The south out of Crimea had the best supply and planning and I think that is what we thought would be the performance in most locations. Not surprising that the troops in Crimea who had been there for a while and are facing the least opposition have performed the best. But today I expect Kherson to be finally captured today (not that resistance will stop but it will be fully occupied). I suspect that things will get extremely more brutal from here. Rolling bombs, more cluster munitions, thermobaric.

Russian tanks are almost all diesel engines. Iirc we're the only nation that uses a turbine engine for its MBT's.

No, China is just posturing for the civilized world. The more this goes on, the better for them. They know that Russia and Ukraine are at an impasse.

China and Russia are frenemies. China needs petrol and grain. Russia needs manufactured goods and cash. Long term, both cannot control central Asia. China would like nothing more than Russia slowly bleeding out.

Turbine and jet are close enough in operation to make little difference.

But I agree, a turbine at idle is not using the same fuel as one at power.
