Evidently the Russians didn't realize that the Soup Nazi is not an actual Nazi.

Issue with the M1A1 tanks is they use a turbine engine and I don't think many Ukes know how to work on those.

Say what again?

Quote:

The Ukrainian army has come up with a clever way to save ammunition, a former advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky said, by modifying commercial drones to resemble something out of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator films, scaring Russian soldiers into thinking "something that belongs to Skynet" is chasing them so they lead the drone back to their base and the Ukrainians can then blast them into the afterlife.

Igor Novikov shared the humorous anecdote in an appearance on MSNBC's Deadline: White House, telling host Nicolle Wallace that he wanted to share "an uplifting story" after a somber discussion of the atrocities committed by Russian soldiers against civilians in areas like Bucha and Irpin.
Quote:

Novikov described the "clever, creative solution that our soldiers have found not to waste ammunition, not to waste artillery shells," noting "we don't do carpet bombing."

The soldiers were taking commercial drones with cameras and camouflaging them "to look like something out of the worst Terminator movie, so it looks incredibly scary," he explained, and then flying them around the areas where the Russian soldiers were:
Quote:

What would you do if you're a Russian soldier and you see something that belongs to Skynet? You run. Where do you run to? You run to your mama. Because you don't have your mama, you run to your base.

That way they lead us to their bases and no camouflage works against that, and then our artillery shoots at the base and that way we protect, you know, our civilians, we protect, you know, the land of Ukraine from any collateral damage, and we don't waste any shells. So, you know, if there's a major problem, just be creative.

Who knows? Maybe that's why this Russian was running away?

Quote:

On Thursday, NATO held an emergency meeting about Russia's increasingly horrific and atrocity-filled invasion of Ukraine. However, unlike most NATO meetings, this one was substantive.

For starters, the attendees were not only NATO nations; there were also observers present: the European Union, Sweden, Finland, Georgia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Ukraine.

If Putin was afraid of being surrounded before, he should take a quick look at his map now (just a reminder that Japan and Russia still have an unresolved border dispute, see Russia conducts military exercises in disputed islands). As if to validate the stereotype of the Germans being either "at your throat or at your heel," the German Foreign Minister showed he was definitely at Putin's heel by leaving early.

Quote:

The conference did break a logjam.

This morning, Poland announced it was transferring a large number of modernized T-72 tanks to Ukraine. More importantly, Slovakia is transferring its S-300 surface-to-air missile system to Ukraine.

I understand. Same issue with training crews for aircraft. I think we could field more firepower using M1A1 than fielding F-16 or A-10.

Rumors of another surrender in Mariupol. The people tweeting this have zero credibility though so take it with a grain of salt.

(the acting does look better though in this one)

I have some questions.

1. Can anyone do an educated guess as to how close that ship is, and would it be in effective range of anti-ship weapons if this were, say, in Odessa?

2. Why is Odessa so armed to the teeth with anti-ship weaponry, but it doesn't seem like we've seen much of the same type of defense from Mariupol (at least that I've noticed)?

Signs of possible Russian supply shortages in Melitopol? Confiscation for cruelty's sake? Something else?

If they can't then the M1A1s would not help them either because those are jet turbine engines. They also burn about 7 gallons of JP8 just to fire them up. An M1A1 also weighs about 15 tons more than a T-72B or T-90 which makes trafficability and bridging even more of an issue.

Indeed, I was being incredulous to the person who said the Ukrainians wouldn't be able to work on the M1A1 engines.

The plan is to use the Abrams to backfill other tanks with NATO allies that are being transferred to Ukraine.

Are the reservists better than new conscripts? Which would be the B team.

Reservists? Why do I doubt they are actually in the existing reserves while they were sending conscripts in the first phase?

Interesting and funny at the same time.

Interesting that the gas field in eastern Ukraine that he mentions has 42 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, which would have a value of almost half a trillion dollars. Ukraine would compete against Russia for supplying gas to Western Europe.

The reserve consists of everyone who has completed the 1 year conscription and is still in the age range to be in the military. It's not a formed reserve like the US has, closer to what we would call the Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR) .

FIFY. Exporting Ukrainian gas to Europe is a much bigger threat to Russia than NATO.

500k seems like a huge number. How is that even possible given what we have seen so far? Did the use many many trains or thousands of busses?

I tend to agree, and HOPE that it is a propaganda exaggeration. But who knows. Regardless if 500k is accurate, we do know it's a lot. And whatever is happening to them can't be good. I've seen reports of Russia already adopting out the children. They say it's orphans but I somehow doubt it's just the orphans.
