I am sure one of his minions will make some serious dough off of this deal if not his family themselves. The amount of oil Russia adds to the market will not have any meaningful impact for the midterms if at all.
It's more cover to move in the direction the administration has long wanted to, and for the midterms, IMO. We announce this deal knowing Ukraine can't back off of attacking Russian refineries while Russia continues to pound civilian infrastructure across Ukraine.
Then Trump can say "I enacted a plan that would have eased the burden of fuel cost for everyone across Europe and the US, but Ukraine sabotaged your prosperity. You can't blame me."
And a whole lot of people will be too ignorant to know better and the tide of public opinion will (at least the administration hopes) turn against Ukraine and allow us force them into capitulation without suffering collateral political damage.
