Russia reportedly lost a second scarce AEW aircraft today. The highly trained crew loss is as damaging as the lost aircraft.

The numbers vary by source, but last I read this would bring the RAF down to seven operational A-50s--and that's to defend all of Russia, not just cover Ukraine.PJYoung said:

Yeah and I guess who knows how many of those seven are in service at any one time.74OA said:The numbers vary by source, but last I read this would bring the RAF down to seven operational A-50s--and that's to defend all of Russia, not just cover Ukraine.PJYoung said:

Either way, it's a devastating blow for the battered Russian air force. The air arm has lost, mostly to Ukrainian long-range surface-to-air missilesAmerican-made Patriot PAC-2s, in particularnine of its best planes in just a month. Including an A-50 that the Ukrainians hit over the Sea of Azov in January.
Prior to that earlier shoot-down, the Russian air force had just nine modernized A-50M/Us. Now it's down to seven, just a few of which are active at any given time.
The A-50s play important supporting roles in Russia's two-year wider war on Ukraine. They help to detect incoming Ukrainian missile raids and also relay radio signals from front-line forces to their headquarters, which might be hundreds of miles away.

I think you missed the joke. The plane did successfully intercept the missiles...with its fuselage.
If it crashes over the Black Sea or the Sea of Azov, does it now get included in their growing submersible navy?74OA said:I got it. Was just playing along.....txags92 said:

I have seen estimates of CEP for HIMARS at 5m or less and I suspect it is on the less side knowing our military published data to underestimate capabilities. So a hardened target the size truck might still survive a HIMAR attack, but little else.74OA said:Almost all US precision/near-precision munitions use INS for primary guidance with GPS providing updates after launch. Losing/degrading GPS means those munition's CEP is modestly expanded, which typically leaves them still operationally effective against most targets excluding some which are hardened/buried.revvie said:
This an interesting tidbit on changing tactics in Ukraine,if true that Russian has some success in jamming US precision guided weapons

I hope the Ukes are still going after SAM sites, this will clear the way for F16s. If Ukes can get an air advantage then they will have a chance. They must have ability to drop cluster bombs and napalm on entrenched positions.
I'm not sure which is worse, admitting they shot their own plane down or admitting that Ukraine did.JFABNRGR said:AlaskanAg99 said:

Are we sure orcs didn't shoot down their own plane?
And another SU34 downed as well.

One solution is to temporarily buy outside the US/EU until production ramps up. The US is jammed up for money at the moment, but the EU could do it.docb said:

Drone wars. Ukraine UAVs repeatedly hit Russian armor hiding inside a warehouse. Wherever it was, it's at the extreme range of those UAVs as they're all displaying "low battery" or "land now" warnings.
HUNTING
These videos are incredibly satisfying to watch. $5,200 in drones taking out tens of millions in Russian military equipment.
