Actors are supposed to play people they aren't.

This bothers me zero. And those of you it does bother, you're position is no better than people complaining that the voice of Simba (an imaginary talking lion) should be voiced by a black person, because talking lions are only… black people, I guess.

Are you also offended they are letting humans play elves?

I do, however, hope they don't ruin it with a glorification of sin. Tolkien would surely disapprove.

What a stupid take, it's silly and unfaithful to the source material to have modern diversity in middle earth.

You aren't reading and addressing my points.

"Silly" is saying only elves should play elves.

"Silly" is saying the melanin in an actor's skin should determine what roles they can play.

If you go down that road, eventually the only capable person of playing a historical figure is that person themself.

"Silly" indeed.
Your comparison is the exact same as the progressive mindset and the constant complaints of "Hollywood whitewashing".

The solution is not to take it to the other extreme, the logical solution is to be as true to the story as possible.

If dwarven women are supposed to look just like dwarven men, you would have thought they would have cast Michelle in the role.

Now one other angle to look at this.

I think I remember Sauron and Saruman were representations of Hitler and Stalin.

So if we go with this as a Lord of the Rings prequel it sets up a racial genocide aspect happening where Sauron succeeds in subracial genocide killing off all of the black elves and black dwarves.

I don't think that is the angle being promoted here though, it's simple pandering.

I don't think that's actually true. There are writings from him where he specifically states that LOTR is not an allegory of them and he wrote much of it before they came along. He did start all of this in WWI though and there is a lot of symbolism out of that war in his books.

Thus, this all really is just simple pandering.

This is more of Hollywood changing successful movies/shows for blacks instead of coming up with Innovative and new actual black movies that aren't stereotypes.

Basically a racially insensitive move to try and cover their asses. "Look, we like black people...we made a black movie...".

It is always befuddling to me that their are some addle brained idiots in Hollywood that feel compelled to remake movies that were essentially perfect in their original form. The original LOTR was one of the best executions of a cherished source material ever. How many countless times have we seen Hollywood try this?

Think about what they are really saying here. You as a movie goer see LOTR and think this movie is not good enough not because of anything having to do with the craft of moviemaking, but because there isn't enough color in the skin of the actors. These very same people would be quick to label the creation team as racist because of it. Irony seems to be invisible to people such as this.

Hard enough to get enough vitamin D while living inside a mountain, so now they have more melanin to make it worse.

I am assuming the reason for choosing the dwarves to be dark skinned is they are looked down upon and thought of as lesser than others.
In other words...

Sadly they will also need more vaccines and boosters.

Skin color absolutely determines which roles an actor can play. Can a white guy play Othello or Frederick Douglass? Can a black guy play Abraham Lincoln or the King of England?
Lately, Hollywood would disagree with you. They cast a black gal to be Ariel of The Little Mermaid. There has been discussion of a black actor portraying both Superman and James Bond (the latter of which would be perfectly fine, but Superman is not black). Thor has no tits, but the comics have lately made Thor a woman. I wouldn't doubt that Hollywood would absolutely cast a black actor to portray Lincoln if given the opportunity, but doubt they'd extend that opportunity to a white actor portraying Othello.

To be fair, this isn't a reboot. It takes place hundreds to thousands years before LOTR in the Second Age. It's based on The Silmarillion which is Tolkien's primary love.

Having said that, they will absolutely make this a diverse cast because it would not get made otherwise. You will never again see a production this big that isn't diverse.

Recall that plege/promise/agreement from a couple of years ago coming out of the Oscars....Hollywood made the declaration that henceforth anything being made would have a diverse cast and I want to say they made some asinine promise that anything made would contain 50% minorities in it.

The orcs have to be white people. The hero has to be a sassy black woman who proves she doesn't need help from a man. She will be accompanied by a funny Asian woman and a good-looking Hispanic or black man that will serve as the love interest.

I've heard that it is a tough read to get started, which is probably why it has been sitting on my bookshelf since I bought it way back around the time the first Hobbit movie came out.
I tried reading it and gave up after about 30 pages or so.

It's true you don't see many dwarf women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for dwarf men.

And this in turn has given rise to the belief that there are no dwarf women, and that dwarves grow out of stone just spring out of holes in the ground!

It's a fictional story, not a documentary. Changing up books when brought to the big screen is more the rule than the exception. I can't imagine why this upsets anyone.

Fictional stories still have canon. And I'm not a racist, so, simply taking something successful and changing characters to black, as a token, isn't something I'd ever think about. Liberalism, at it's core, is racist as ****.

They did it in the witcher and it didn't really bother me except that they still managed to make it make as little sense as possible, which seems to be the goal. Odd in a story where there a multiple large extremely racist factions and the writers do things like send a black Fringilla to the Nilfguardians (full blown Nazis essentially) and expect us believe that racism in this imaginary world extends to literally anything you can think of except skin color.
