They did it in the witcher and it didn't really bother me except that they still managed to make it make as little sense as possible, which seems to be the goal. Odd in a story where there a multiple large extremely racist factions and the writers do things like send a black Fringilla to the Nilfguardians (full blown Nazis essentially) and expect us believe that racism in this imaginary world extends to literally anything you can think of except skin color.

I was coming to post about how they made sure to shoehorn woke garbage into The Witcher series as well...but they absolutely butchered a ton of the story regardless of the woke PC nonsense. I'm sure this series will achieve the same
The Witcher doesn't have the massive familiarity that Tolkien does. I know it has it's level of popularity, but it doesn't scratch the surface of LOTR. It isn't quite as easy to spot the blatant tokenism for those unfamiliar with the source material.

Black people don't even watch lord of the rings. It's like Tyler perry for white people!
Madea commentary on LOTR would be awesome.

"What the hail they think they doin choppin' his head off? Ain't got no time for a damn sword...cap his ass!"

"Them dwarfs work that mine like I worked that pole back in the day...hallelujer"

Is that David Crosby carved into his armor?

They could have cast Obama and wouldn't have needed to do anything to the ears.

The reason I have no interest in ever seeing Hamilton. Historically based movies should be at least loosely accurate.

Definitely didn't compute with me. Granted, I've only read the first book and played the games but they've also made the Nilfgardians defenders of the elves, who in this universe, are the hated outcasts.

I don't recall that in the game unless it was a double cross by the nilfgardians that i don't recall.

Actors are supposed to play people they aren't.

This bothers me zero. And those of you it does bother, you're position is no better than people complaining that the voice of Simba (an imaginary talking lion) should be voiced by a black person, because talking lions are only… black people, I guess.

Are you also offended they are letting humans play elves?

I do, however, hope they don't ruin it with a glorification of sin. Tolkien would surely disapprove.
If and only if the source material doesn't do an adequate job of world building. JRR Tolkien did quite the opposite. He was a master world builder down to the descriptions of the people inhabiting that world. Remember he created something that would be a kin to England's mythology. Where do people of African descent play apart of England's ancient lore?

The problem with Amazon's adaptation is it's a "prequel" to his stories that was set in the 3rd age. By them going before it to the 2nd age they have opened a very uncomfortable can of worms. In order to get to the people of the 3rd age, Amazon will need to justify or explain some kind of mass genocide event to 'undo' the people to get us to the 3rd age.

I'm fine with characters being what ever race they want as long as it doesn't contradict the source material. Our position is no where near that of those of the Lion King. If you can't see the difference between the two well that is on you and you can stay ignorant.

Now one other angle to look at this.

I think I remember Sauron and Saruman were representations of Hitler and Stalin.

So if we go with this as a Lord of the Rings prequel it sets up a racial genocide aspect happening where Sauron succeeds in subracial genocide killing off all of the black elves and black dwarves.

I don't think that is the angle being promoted here though, it's simple pandering.

Never understood why Sauron and Saruman names were so similar. I mean the dude had a great imagination and couldn't come up with something else?

This is more of Hollywood changing successful movies/shows for blacks instead of coming up with Innovative and new actual black movies that aren't stereotypes.

Basically a racially insensitive move to try and cover their asses. "Look, we like black people...we made a black movie...".

I saw an advertisement for a series about a black Anne Boleyn. I mean it's not like they had cameras back then but given that she was English and every depiction of her in paint shows her as being very white… but artistic license I guess.

Edit: I now see the post about that above. I skimmed past earlier.

Queen Latifa as The Equalizer is another example where the original was played by Bob Woodward, an old white guy. The list of this nonsense goes on and on....

Well in all fairness though Denzel Washington had three Equalizer movies. That sort of thing is fine but when you're taking a historically white character and making them black just for the sake of it to me that's bizarre.

A guy basically being a vigilante going around equalizing people who have hurt others isn't really color problem to me. Those movies are actually really good.

His man on fire is amazing. One of the best revenge movies I've ever seen.

I don't really care what color the actors are so long as they are good. These stills don't give me a lot of hope though. Looks way too polished in a bad way.
