Well bats made covid and if we had built more windmills maybe we could have stopped the transmission of the world's most dangerous disease.

They don't buy the property to build a project because of the massive liability that comes with buying and owning the property. Not the cost.

Same is true for oil and gas and solar and lots of other things.

Ok, so honestly how much of the duck population is killed annually by windmills?

It seems like a negligible number to me.

I think this is a 'I hate windmills and will whine about any little issue even if I don't personally care about the issue' thing.

It just comes off as disingenuous.

It's like if a Planned Parenthood was going to be built on endangered striped banana slug habitat. People would scream 'save the striped banana slugs' even when nobody gives a **** about slugs and just wants something to complain about Planned Parenthood.

I think it says more about the save the earth type supporters of windmills.

Bird strikes by wind turbine blades has always been an issue. To expand on your comments, every source of power generation has issues. The MSM ignores the issues associated with green energy sources that are being propped up right now. Aside from the fact, the wind doesn't always blow and the sun doesn't always shine.

If we use electricity to power the new world here are some of the issues:

1. The grid is already fragile - ref Winter Storm Uri, add load and demand on that and the situation gets worse. It is also just plain risk having all your eggs in one basket - concentration risk
2. The grid will need to be drastically expanded. Power lines everywhere and certainly getting to where the wind and solar are installed.
3. Batteries - good lord the amount of lithium mining that will need to be done to satisfy projected demand by 2050.... Mines are pretty and nothing ever goes wrong there. People are never displaced.
4. Whatcha gonna do with all those batteries AOC when they reach the end of their useful life?
5. Where you gonna put all those windmills and solar farms? The amount required to power the grid is enormous.
6. Also, with those you are going to need energy storage facilities to satisfy demand when the wind isn't blowing and the sun isn't shining and/or the demand is high. Battery storage facilities all over the place. More batteries. More risk.

The idea of green energy is a good and noble cause. It is not practical, at least not right now. Just ask the Europeans who are in the middle of an energy crisis because they shut down a lot of their base load power gen assets down that weren't eco friendly and the sun didn't shine as much and the wind didn't blow. Oh and then they stopped drilling for nat gas and decided to buy it from Old Vlad Putin. Definition of stupid decision making all in the name of political correctness.

The US needs a nuclear base load power energy policy with the appropriate amount of renewable to handle the flex demand. At least until I can go to Walmart and buy my Mr. Fusion and slap it on the F-250.
Amazon has them on sale this week for $250, they are celebrating Ford Truck Month.

I'm all for renewable, so-called clean energy. We have clean energy now, and it is called nuclear, but the NIMBYs will have none of it. Aside from nuclear, we are at least 20 years away from having any semblance of renewable, clean energy.

It is all more about power, as in having control over others more than anything.

We are experiencing the catastrophic effects of the irrational fear of Climate Change causing irreparable harm to our society. Windmill turbines killing millions of birds and bats is a consequence of this glorification of Green Energy and blindly following green energy poclicies.

Liberals really hate birds and bats.

Their windmills strategically placed in migratory paths kill millions of birds and bats.

Their solar farms in California attract birds because the kilometer diameter mirror arrays look like lakes from the air. Then the birds get vaporize as the fly into the focused sunlight.

Their house cats kill over a billion birds a year.

Total bird populations have decreased by over 3 billion since 1970. The primary cause is habitat destruction. The brainiacs at Audubon blame global warming and Trump (seriously).

So-called clean energy projects have huge footprints compared to traditional energy production and use much more rare elements that must be mined and shipped, adding much more to habitat loss. By the way, the ships run on dirty diesel engines and dump their waste directly into the ocean.

I hope that nature can survive liberal government policies.

It was doing much better when free market innovation was making the world cleaner and better. For example, unlike songbirds, duck populations have increased primarily through habitat restoration by duck hunters

Think about what kind of mutant virus one could get by mixing bat blood and avian blood.

Sarcasm for those unfamiliar with the concept.

Out of curiosity, is anybody (or anybody you know) here a windmill leaser in Texas?

What is the going rate for a windmill lease yearly? What are the payments up front for surface damages etc?

If it's as much as MuchoPollos has stated earlier it makes sense why people allow them.

They don't buy the property (when available) because it doesn't make economic sense for them to do so. The royalties they pay applied to the cost of the property would make for a very long payout to break even.

And then when the tax credits run out, they would have a property with a hell of a cleanup to do. Sure, they supposedly have to clean up at the end, but I'm not sure that they are fully accounting for the cost of that. If they go bankrupt, then they don't clean up anything.

Without the government subsidies, nothing about them makes any economic sense.... it would take - based on models I've seen - 25 years or so for them to break even, in optimal conditions. And for a mill with a supposed 20year life, how feasible does that sound?

Exactly.

More and more projects are done, not because they make sense, but because the government gives all kinds of artificial incentives to people to do them.

It's little more than Socialist Central Planning with the difference that instead of owning the means of production, the Modern American Politico controls much of how they are used.

Aren't the subsidies over?

We are still dealing with requirements for how much renewable the utilities have to have

Ok, windmills kill birds and bats.

But what about the snails and lizards who are affected by the pipelines?

I'm not positive, but like most things the government touches, I suspect that depends on one's definition of "subsidies..." I would guess there are still a number of programs at the federal level that "encourage" green energy.
