I know I am being a total Karen. I don't care. I went to a doctor's appointment today, or I tried. They had a sign that masks are mandatory. Fine. I don't have a mask, but I'll wear one. Places that require you to wear a mask will usually give you one. NOT MY ******* DOCTOR'S OFFICE.

Me: Can I have a mask? I don't have one.

Them: Can you go get yours from your car?

Me: I don't HAVE a mask.

Them: We'll need to reschedule your appointment. (WTF, seriously?)

Me: Can't you just give me a mask?

Them: It's our policy to not provide masks.

Me: What? That's crazy. Are you all vaccinated?

Them: Yes, everyone has been vaccinated.

Me: Why is this an issue?

Them: It's our policy.

Me: I'm done with Dr. X. Just cancel my appointment. Tell Dr. X he just lost a patient.


I called the office manager and spoke with them. No apology, just falling back on policy. Mask costs less than $1. But they're not willing to provide them to people who don't have them? The freaking Apple store, Kroger, HEB, Lowe's, etc. provided masks when they required them. But a doctor's office? Get out of here with that crazy request, lady. Hell, I would have paid them $1 for a mask.

Not one single communication I got from these morons referenced a mask. I'm thinking if you won't provide a mask, and you'll cancel someone's appointment if they don't have a mask, you'd want to be really clear about that. But no.

I'd watch out for a cancellation fee. if they won't give you a mask then they sound cheap enough to charge you for cancelling your appointment without notice

You are far too kind to call this person Dr. X.

I would let everyone I know be aware of their policy, which defies science / logic. No excuses for this. These are the people we are suppose to ask for reasonable health guidance yet so many are using illogical practices...but trust them....

It is a doctor's office so they are normally going to have masks.
I'll bet they would have found one for a friend or relative, and
should at least have offered to sell one to you.
If unwilling to do that simple thing, they should have provided warning.
Raise HELL about it and see if the actual doctor gets involved.
Or, blow it off, and go get a better doctor.

I have a Dr. Office story, but the cops were called on me before I exited.

Later on, I changed tactics. I used the portal to create the appointment, but I asked for a teledoc/virtual meeting because "I don't think masks work. I am scared. I do not want to be treated as a second class citizen." I got the appointment.

You do realize that all health care providers in Texas are guided by their respective state boards. The boards in turn defer Covid protocol to CDC guidelines. Wearing masks in office except such that treatment requires removal is the guideline.

Now…………, not providing one, that's very silly.

I was curious, so I looked. You can get a pack for as low as $0.06 a mask on Amazon. This guy's suppliers can probably get them for even less.

I had to fire my dentist because he wanted to charge me $25 out of pocket for PPE during my visit. I offered to bring him some from my office, but it turns out they really just wanted $25 for two bucks worth of equipment. Nice racket.

Agree....the biggest issue here is how stubborn they were to not provide a reasonable accommodation for a patient that was looking to abide by the regulations....the masks are less than $1 per. Fine, don't give it to the entire family of 5 that maybe shows up but at least the 1 patient...cost benefit analysis.


I was not aware of the state boards issue. In Texas....does Abbott's order not prohibit? Wife and kids have been to the doctor in the past 2 months and they did not wear a mask but were asked if they had symptoms or tested positive or had been around anyone that was positive. Seemed pretty reasonable to me.



I just saw something on Baylor Scott and White's site that struck me as odd and it just makes you have to be a bit concerned about the level of education / awareness / reality of those we are trusting our lives to. This was in regards to wearing a masks. It should be science / efficacy based not "compassion" based:

When we wear a mask, even though we may have never had COVID-19 or lost a loved one to this terrible virus, we are being compassionate

Took my daughter to the pediatrician a few weeks ago. Neither one of us were wearing masks. While I was signing the check in sheet, the receptionist sheepishly handed me two paper masks, but didn't say anything about them. I said thanks, and put the masks in my pocket. When I left I threw them away. No one said a word about masking up during the entire visit.

Good way to handle it IMO. Make them available. People can use them if they wish.
