https://www.click2houston.com/news/texas/2022/03/29/texas-am-to-grant-free-tuition-room-and-board-to-its-ukrainian-students/

Ukrainian students across the Texas A&M University System's 11 campuses and research centers will receive free tuition starting next semester, Chancellor John Sharp said Tuesday.
The university system will cover all tuition and fees, as well as certain living expenses, for the students. At least 14 students from Ukraine have been identified as eligible for the financial support so far, Associate Vice Chancellor Tim Eaton said. The number is likely to increase as more students are identified, he said.
The move is part of the university's response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Earlier this month, Texas A&M announced it would be cutting research ties with Russian entitiesand might do the same with study abroad and faculty exchange programs in Russia.
So they're going to put the burden on a mom and pop sending, their child to college, that they've worked hard for and saved, so they can be the first in their family to graduate college? Sharp can ****off unless he guarantees no tuition increase during this statement to Russia. Btw, President Rainman just committed to admitting 100K Ukrainians which means over 1 million because everyone invading the border will claim they're Ukrainian and will be allowed in. Rick Perry still deserves a nut punch for in state tuition for illegals.

This pisses me off. These countries only want to join NATO because they're scared and want the protection now. For years their citizens on social social media have excoriated the US for not having free healthcare while they can't protect themselves. Admitting them to NATO gives them the protection of our blood and treasure while they still spend their money on social security nets for their citizens, that's having your cake and eating it too. I say **** them unless they build a formidable military and cut their social spending.

ETA: They can offer so many benefits to their citizens because if our military. Let them live in a real world and Bernie Bros can stop using them as examples to aspire to and shove their socialist policies up their asses without lube.

on the other hand, the NATO laws that Trump tried to enforce mandate spending 2% of each countries GDP on defense.

which is why all the Euros were freeloading off the USA

now I bet they will all start to spend the minimums. especially if DeSantis is the President in 2024

100 percent truth. A lot of Europe, knowing Trump might be back in 2025, is jumping on the 'free protection from Russia courtesy of the US' bandwagon that is NATO right now.
Exactly right! Our kids go and die because of a ****ing piece of paper while they keep life as usual because they're talking **** while standing behind our military? NO **** THEM, let them drape their youth's coffins with their flags while we give them weapons and intelligence!

This **** pissed me off. Why should our kids die for arrogant asses while theirs are studying gender studies? We've sacrificed enough IMO.

I don't want a "minimum" for them. They should be able to protect themselves and if needed, we can help out, but that's not how it is.

Finland and Sweden would instantly be NATO's most capable European EU militaries next to France and Poland. Their addition would actually reduce the U.S. military burden with respect to NATO. Their militaries are small (to be expected since they're also small countries) but very well equipped and very well trained.

One thing to keep in mind is that European boys have gone home in boxes in support of America far more recently than Americans have gone home in boxes for Europeans. We invoked NATO article 5 after 9/11 and took Europe along for the ride.

The target of spending 2% GDP on defense is just that: a target. It isn't mandated anywhere in the North Atlantic Treaty. It is just a mutually-agreed guideline among NATO members. It is a good idea and it was wrong that virtually all European states were below this threshold, but Trump did not "enforce the NATO laws" as you put it.

That piece of paper is why our kids ~ haven't ~ gone over to Europe to die in the past 75 years. Mutual defense treaties make us safer because they make wars less likely. A lot less likely. The sustained peace among NATO members is the longest sustained peace in the history of European nation states.

You invoke the safety of our children, but your attitude reminds most of a deadbeat dad. One who doesn't want to pay the bills. One who would rather rid himself of banal and tiresome responsibilities - like maintaining the diplomatic infrastructure he inherited from past generations.

Good lawd, you don't even realize you further reinforced my point with your drivel. The fact is that most NATO members haven't lived up to their required obligation and it puts our soldiers in the crosshairs. Why should our sons and daughters die to protect countries that haven't fulfilled their commitments? WE are the reason that there's been peace because of a document. The majority of NATO members have abused our protection for their own benefit. You remove us and our capabilities from the equation then Europe and Asia is at war, but that should never be taken for granted. They need to build up their military for their own security and never be willing to sacrifice our youth when they're not willing to do so. We can still be the badass backstop provided their own is on the front lines.

Are you willing to welcome flag draped coffins of our soldiers returning from a defending the land of people that aren't prepared to defend themselves? If so, then you're no better than the pos politicians (both parties) that send them to their death.

They (NATO countries) fought with us in the sandbox after 9/11 when we declared Article 5. Seems like they were willing to back us on something that had nothing to do with them and would get their kids shipped back in a box just the same. Pretty solid display of good faith if you ask me.

" Western allies of the United States have borne significant costs in the post-9/11 wars, in terms of both dollars and lives. This report's key findings indicate that, besides the United States, the top five countries to send troops to the war in Afghanistan were the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and Canada. The United Kingdom in particular supplied roughly two to three times the troops of the other top contributing allies when considered relative to its population. British and Canadian troops put their lives at risk at twice the rate of American troops, when seen as a percentage of each country's peak deployment. The top contributing allies lost over a thousand lives in the U.S.-led conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

When measured as a percentage of their annual baseline military expenditures, the United Kingdom and Canada spent roughly half as much on Afghanistan as the United States. And when measured in terms relative to their respective Gross Domestic Products (GDPs), the U.S. provided less foreign aid than did the U.K., and about the same amount as Germany and Canada.

Western allies' primary interest in making their significant contributions was not their own security, but cementing their relationships with the U.S."

That's the problem with alliances. If you expect for them to be unidirectional then you won't have any and those countries will eventually align themselves elsewhere both militarily and economically.

Once you're completely isolated it becomes much easier to eventually be defeated by those who would benefit from your downfall. Even the USA isn't immune. Especially now that the US is predominantly a consumer and not a production oriented nation.

My very hot sports opinion is that the USA should EXIT NATO........

We need to force Western Europe to spend more on their own defense and fund and staff NATO on their own. They need to collectively form their own battle groups, C&C, logistics, etc. Western Europe populations of NATO countries is far greater than Russia and they could/should be able to field a collective army and military defense against Russia without our support.

We can still be a strategic partner to NATO without being a member and having them rely on the USA to be the bully and the banker for the organization.

Obviously we would still be friendly and provide some semblance of a security partnership (would not call it a guarantee) and likely keep our troops and bases/facilities/ports presence in western Europe.

I agree that European militaries have not lived up to their requirements.

That doesn't mean that their reaction to this will not change those calculations. They clearly will. The new Ukrainian dispora will also alter those calculations further. In regards to Sweden and Finland, you're looking at two countries with very different military expectations than in other European countries.

Sweden has a similar population to Denmark (both of which are smaller than either DFW or Houston metro areas) but triple the active armed forces and double the reserves. They have a sophisticated defense industry and an extensive military training structure.

Finland has compulsory military service and a crazy total nation defense plan that is practiced regularly. Finland especially would be a nightmare to invade. Those countries are after the UK, France and Poland two of the most prepared and well equipped militaries in Europe. Are they small in comparison to Russia? Yes but they're also less than 4% of the population of Russia.

So yes, should Germany and other parts of Europe live up to their obligations from which they have been shielded for 70 years? Yes. But this action is going to radically change calculations all over Europe. Poland is doubling their armed forces. Romania, Czech Republic, Baltic states and others will also be increasing size and spending. With appropriate help and training the US might be leading the alliance, but we will have significantly more allied resources along the Eastern flank.
