War isn't just soldiers or anonymous civilian casualties.

Why would it be wrong to post? You didn't kill him. The title of this thread doesn't pretend to be something it's not. This is a war and people die. It needs to be real.

With the admin we have in right now, that might lead to swift banking sanctions.
As much as I normally hate them, they're basically the best option at this point. Real sanctions, not the half-hearted virtue signaling that has masqueraded as sanctions in the past. Historically, we've made them cause discomfort, and only to people below a certain tier. You want change, you have to hit the power players in Russia, and hit them hard, even if that results in problems in your own country. Do the right sanctions on the right people, they'll take care of the problem, one way or another.

Feel like this entire thing gonna spiral and Nato will be involved soon. WW3 here we come.
Good. NATO get off your ass!!
That would NOT be good. Not sure if serious.
And the current situation in Ukraine is?

I dont think America needs to get directly involved, but Europe should. And yes, we should back them, its in our interest.

Europe means NATO, you think Putin is going to let that happen without retaliation? I don't think you understand how that could quickly spiral out of control.

You're talking about a full blown WWIII.

translation

They're asking names, where they're from, what's the mission, where are you going, where they disembarked from - they were training in Crimea and didn't know they were in Ukraine - They're hesitating to answer questions about the commanders name.

Do you speak Russian? based on their responses it sounds like maybe they were conscripted. Neither seemed hardened enough to be regular standing army members.

I do not - it was a translation farther down in the Twitter thread.

Now that we're roughly 24 hours in, what is the big picture? It sure doesn't look that Russia managed a decapitating strike. Ukraine appears to be mounting a credible defense so far.

Lots of fog-of-war, but there was a report...I know I know, twitter, who can be trusted, but this is how some credible news is reported now....they are to start shelling Kiev (checks watch), an hour ago. 3am Local time.

Pripyat is too far away from Kiev to hit with artillery from there, but it seemed like they took up a defensive position there to prevent retaliatory strikes and establish some sort of safe staging zone. They could easily do that by bringing in gear from Belarus, where they have already brought equipment from so far.

I think Russias goal was to take Kiev on night one along with a few other high profile targets.

They failed at that.

The only move I see left for putin is to go full stop to try to roll over the entire country

I dont see how he could pull back at this point

I don't think Putin thought Ukraine would fight back this hard. Ukraine is still outmatched but they are definitely killing a lot of Russians. I fear that Putin will take out his frustration on Kiev and civilian casualties will be massive. I hope I'm wrong.

So far it's been a pretty impressive positive day for the Ukrainians. They have basically expelled the Russians from most major cities. They have retaken Antononov airport near Kiev.

Russians did capture Chernobyl area and had some advances north and west of the crimea. But basically the Ukrainians have held pretty solid everywhere else.

Worry now is that there are expected major air strikes tonight. Also, estimates are that Russians only threw about a third of their men at the Ukrainians today.

I think the expectation is that tomorrow is going to be the more Pivotal day

I still fully expect the Russians to take the Ukrainian military to the woodshed. The more losses they take the tougher it will be and the more empowered the resistance will be. If the civilians really resist Russia is screwed.

I find that really interesting. A big emphasis of Russia military doctrine is apparently numerical superiority. They broke from their convention and probably suffered higher casualties than if they committed their full forces.

I saw elsewhere on Twitter that Russian advances are largely following roadways. They aren't off-roading and they are sort of stuck in traffic. Maybe they expected a lot less resistance or to be greeted as liberators. But if they keep coming at the Ukrainians just driving down the street in single file lines, there numbers won't count for much.

I agree with you, but I also think you and TriAg2010 below you are correct.

The Russians have miscalculated. I believe they thought this would be as easy for them to waltz into Ukraine as it was for us to waltz into Afghanistan and Iraq....they are taking heavy losses. I think this surprised them.

I think NATO is in a wait-and-see mode where they surround Ukraine with resistance, waiting to see if they are going to be blitzkrieged and moved on or Russia will get stuck in a quagmire where they dont have to really do anything but supply arms.

Yeah, yeah, Containment, which caused wars in Korea and Vietnam, didnt really work and weren't winnable, but we'll see what happens when the Europeans chestnuts are roasting on the fire instead of just ours.
