Putin's speech a couple of days went 30 minutes before he even mentioned NATO. He spent more time talking about how Ukraine wasn't a legitimate country than he did about NATO. In addition, NATo hasn't expanded in Europe in over a decade (I'm not counting N. Macedonia for the sake of this discussion - don't think Putin is either), and the dispute in Donbas and Crimea meant that Ukraine wasn't even eligibile for NATO membership for the forseeable future.

Putin is just trying to pretend he has a legitimate excuse for invasion, and you're buying it.
