When police screw up like this, justice demands swift action. Now that he has been fired, time for the criminal prosecution.


A suspected drunk driver on a low speed chase turned down a cul-de-sac. The police officer got out of his car and shot the guy dead as he was driving slowly towards him. The police chief basically said was no need to resort to deadly force at that point.

The Arlington police officer who fatally shot a 40-year-old man Wednesday has been fired for violating department policy. Police Chief Al Jones identified the officer as Robert Phillips, who fired multiple shots at Jesse Fischer of Addison.

The shooting happened after officers followed Fischer in a low-speed chase into Carla Court, a cul de sac. Fischer had been stopped in the middle of the roadway along Pioneer Parkway near Daniel Drive when police first arrived on the scene, Sgt. Chris Moore said in a press conference Wednesday evening.

Once on Carla Court, Fischer made a U-turn and drove toward an officer who had gotten out of his vehicle. Dash camera footage shows Phillips firing multiple shots into the front window of Fischer's car. Jones said there were many steps Phillips could have taken, such as getting behind or back into the police car. Because the officers knew they were going into a dead-end street, Jones said the officers could have blocked the street until Fischer surrendered.

The move to terminate Phillips was about transparency and trust within the community, Jones said. "It's not about politics to me; it's about righting wrong, it's about morals," Jones said.

The video shows them trying to get him to exit the vehicle multiple times during the chase and him driving off instead. I don't see why the Chief thought he was going to surrender this time when he clearly had not on the other occasions they tried to get him out of the car.

So if he had blocked the street with his police car, and then got back in it, preventing an escape, or just left his car and evaded, wouldn't he have been creating a danger to the neighboring houses?

I think he did the right thing.

I think he did the right thing.


That's the scenario that ran through my mind. They block his exit. Drunk guy proceeds to high tail it right into some kid's bedroom wall while the kid's playing video games. Cops tried to exit their vehicle and shoot the drunk driver, but by then it was too late. Kid pronounced dead at the scene.

Yes, in hindsight it was probably not the best choice but I can kind of understand it.

But we have people here who want to send the cop to prison for this. I can't make this line of thinking make sense.

No one has said prison. Definitely fired. Getting out was not a good choice. Should have blocked the street first. Shooting wasn't really justified. Guy was barely moving, and the cop had a lot of other options. Cop's default reaction can't be to shoot every time he gets scared.

Yeah.......I don't know about that one.

Yes dude was going 5 mph at him, but could have just as quickly floored it and killed the officer.

Probably shouldn't have exited vehicle yet as could have blocked vehicle in with other officer.

At same time, don't run from police and then drive your vehicle in the direction of an officers person.

Toss up for me. I can accept firing if he violated policy, but no wrongful death lawsuit or criminal findings against officer.
