One of the reasons we went in there 20 years ago was because the Taliban were either complicit in or too weak to stop terrorist training grounds from existing in the country.

I would like to hear him say something about that going forward. Do they still support or allow terrorists to use their country?

Because they already have more weapons there than they know what to do with.

We saw a large number of our youth who has been using narcotics. That is so unfortunate. It is sad to see so many young people without any faith in the future. So from now on we will be a narcotics free country. We will have alternative crops. We can do that.

Commentary: Most of the narcotics flowing into Russia were grown in Afghanistan. Russia put a lot of pressure on them about the opiate crisis.

Foreign fighters. We will not allow foreigners who wish to harm the security of other countries, any space in Afghanistan. One point, the Afghanistan soil is not going to be used against anybody. We assure the international community. Anybody who uses our land against other countries we are not going to allow them at all.

During the DOJ presser this morning, Kirby was asked about over 100,000 people who were on the evacuation lists (Americans, NATO allies' people and Afghans) and how long would that take? Could they do it by Aug 31st so as to meet the self-imposed (?) deadline?

Neither he nor the General with him could answer that question. But one thing is that neither one disputed that 100,000 number.

Can women continue to work for the media in the same way as the past? Just wait and see what the future government is going to say. Saw an interview with a reporter who was in Saigon in 1975. He said they had about 55 days to evacuate before the final 24 hours when it became chaotic. IIRC, he said they had evacuated 35,000 Vietnamese in the days leading up to that last day. And they got another 10,000 out that day.

All told, between American personnel and Vietnamese they extracted over 150,000.

That obviously is not happening in Afghanistan, although the General at today's briefing said he thought they could plane out every hour "sometime in the next 24 hours." And he didn't sound all that confident at that.

The final thing that jaw dropping at that presser was Kirby's flat refusal to address a question about how many Afghan civilians had dies at the airport and how many died from falling off planes. He would only say the Air Force would be addressing that question later today.

Waiting for fractions to start breaking off from this so called Taliban Alliance. In 3 years it's going to have descended into civil war.

Analyst on Al Jazeera: Seems that women will be allowed to work pretty much everywhere, police, attorney general office, etc. However, Islamic law is not some thing really written in stone. It's all interpretations, having to be done by religious scholars. That's why you see such a huge difference between somewhere ultraconservative like Saudi Arabia and other countries that have "Islamic law" but are much more liberal.

I saw recently that Russia held joint exercises with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan aimed at the Afghan border. The statement was defending this frontier, but i can see them jumping in to save the Uzbeks and Tajiks from the Pashtuns. When the time comes, the former Soviet satellites just take the regions and their ethnic kin. Maybe.
