I find this picture incredibly powerful. The facial expression, the flag wrapped up, the haste with which it was taken (and thus fuzzy) all perfectly reflects how poorly this was planned and executed.
I would have rather left the flag and grabbed the drones.

What base are they going to refuel at? It's a horrible situation. They likely don't have much time they can fly around waiting to land. It's likely why we don't see more planes. No way to fuel them. It was a mistake to abandon the air bases.
Ideally they would have a staging area in a neighboring country where they could fly to Kabul and back on one tank of gas. Of course, that would require planning that obviously didn't happen here. I suppose Pakistan would be a possibility, but I'm not sure if they would allow that or if it would be any more secure.

They look to be using Dubai and Qatar as sort of staging area, but they may be too far away for one tank of fuel. Especially if they have to fly around Iran.

Will try to meet half way on photo op - Harris and window shot - possibly. A room that is used to brief security team would not allow unclass laptops access to the docking station/classified system. Does not work that way.

Can you even tell if its a window in the Harris shot? Looks like an empty bookshelf to me.

As for the laptop, even if you can tell for certain whether its a laptop cleared for classified system (which you can't), any system is going to have far bigger security measures intact to keep an unauthorized laptop from gaining access to the system -- it's not like the system sees a laptop full of malware and trojans and says "this doesn't look good - but it has a red sticker so it must be ok!").

It's a photo op.

When I flew MD11's in and out of AFG, we'd tanker fuel in so as to not need refueling. We'd stop in Lahore (not as inviting a place as the name might suggest) or Karachi on the way out. Other options (then) included Urumqui (China) Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) and Kazakhstan; all contingent on where you were going. In the current diplomatic milieu, these may not all be players still, but I have to believe the Pakis would at least let us refuel- but I don't know.

16 August 0311 Kabul Time

Approximately 2 hours until sunrise. It appears some sort of understanding between the Taliban and US mil elements at the airport has held thus far. Continued prayers for a safe evacuation with no loss of life are in order.

Afghan airspace remains open to commercial aviation although obviously the Kabul airport itself is closed to civilian traffic.

In their official statements, as published by MSM outlets, the Taliban leadership appear eager to bolster the legitimacy of their new regime by keeping bloodshed to a minimum. It is deeply humiliating for the US to be obliged to have to depend upon the mercies of the Taliban to effect the evacuation but it beats the alternative.

Still not out of the woods and things could change dramatically whether from malice or a misunderstanding in a moment.

World leaders are speaking out about their disappointment with the security situation in Afghanistan, with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson going so far as to pin the blame on President Joe Biden and the United States.

Would have to check if Boris is up for re-election soon, would be good posturing on his part

Good. Met a Dutch couple in 2018 in Germany. They overheard a German man talking badly about Trump and they felt the need to make a point of telling us that while they weren't fans of Trump it was nice to have a US president who wasn't always apologizing to the world.

Our allies need to push back against the ineptitude of Biden. He makes us and them look weaker than we have in decades.

Is this debacle bad enough to be the catalyst that sets off a chain of events that will have this administration stumbling into the next 10-20 year war?

I think the most immediate threat to our troops at the airport is going to come from unruly crowds that could very quickly turn into a violent mob. The 82nd are not riot police.

I am angry and disgusted beyond words that these kids are being put into this situation while despicable characters like Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Biden... all of em, made their millions selling us a BS narrative.

I bet General Milley is livid.

I watched that Taliban press conference and not once did any of them state at the beginning what their preferred pronouns were.

You assume that the people running the Biden administration are in any way competent or concerned about security like that.

Just my OCD working overtime.......again.

Why is Harris in a room with a window that has clear view of her monitor for a secure call.

Also, why does the laptop Biden is using that is hooked into the docking station have a green sticker? Green stickers are for unclassified system use only.

Worked many years in that world and seeing this level of likely no-no's just validated it is amateur hour.

I don't think that is her actual room and windows. That looks to be some sort of weird background image. Notice the blue/white tint of it.

My guess is there is a secure room underground at the NO and that's where she's at.

TheDrive site linked above reporting US officials expecting capacity to reach 5,000 out per day but not at that level yet. Moving more resources in. US embassy staff including top brass have not left the airport, they are processing visas. British ambassador is there personally processing visas as well. States he will not leave until the end.

This again rises hope that Taliban have agreed to stay away from airport for the time being.

Agreed. If the taliban were gonna do something they would have already.

They would be stupid to attack the airport. They have won. They have the country. They have the PR victory. And who knows, Biden might have sent them pallets of cash to stay away as well.

The imagery on this is staggering.

Biden, old, Dementia ridden and on vacation, gas no supporting staff. Except some zoomers.

The take away is: no one cares. No one is there.
