So, if the Taliban allows terrorists to have a safe haven in Afghanistan there will be consequences.

But those consequences won't be a military response because POTUS is "unwilling" to do that.

I'm sure the Taliban leaders are super duper worried.

That is one point that is going to be "lost" I am sure. Everything that is happening right now in Kabul is at the behest of the Taliban. They are letting us go and we are in control of absolutely nothing aside from maybe the firing arc distance of our dudes on the ground right now and even that is because the Taliban is deciding to not contest that.

They are controlling both the event and narrative right now and frankly, making us look like absolute *****es to the world. And yes, that matters a lot on the world stage.

The sad part is yes the taliban are in control to get any military / fixed wing transports on / off the ground you need to control the hills a few miles out. Not just the internal compound. RAF did this for years on Bastion.

Unless you're flying rotary wing craft in/out you need to own the hills (we don't)

Gospel right here. Been proven so many times in history and even fantasy. "I have the high ground , Anakin!" Most recent failure I can think of is the Battle of Wanat.

I have been wondering as to the tactical situation. We have thousands on the ground and not sure how they are deployed. Doubt we will know and we honestly shouldn't but the hills was the first thing I thought of past the actual air strip itself.

Our guys are either going to get slaughtered, or have to mow down a **** ton of civilians for all the world to see on the way out.

I cannot believe the chaos on the tarmac right now. I can't even imagine the stress and disorder that our guys on the ground are going through. That being said, I also can't believe what I am seeing with these crowds of people literally hanging onto departing aircraft. WTF?! I was a member on a TRAP team for a while and cannot fathom as to how the air strip is not secure. Boggles my mind. Again, I know I don't have a full grasp of the ground situation right now and not mad at our troops but just the entire f'ing situation.

Either civilians are going to get killed/wounded when the US takes back the airfield, or the taliban will start in.

I don't see any other way. You aren't going to be able to get desperate people off the tarmac voluntarily.

Not to mention there is probably tons of FOD on the runway now, which could be catastrophic.

Again, just the reality is Taliban is dictating terms on this. How many billions are they demanding of Biden right now?

They can push all the civilians onto the runway and force our troops to act. They can start shooting at our troops, triggering a response, and us shooting civilians.

They can wait until those other 4000 US troops show up, deplane, then blow up the planes and murder them all.

And this all could have been avoided.

Kabul airport, while convenient for being in the capitol of Afghanistan is horrible militarily.
