My boss has hounded me this week about getting vaccinated. I'm 1 of 2 unvaccinated guys in an office of about 20 vaccinated. The conversation usually goes like this:

Boss: You really need to get vaccinated. Everyone else in here is.
Me: Well, that's good but I'm not getting it.
Boss: We need to keep this office safe and you not getting vaccinated puts that at risk.
Me: How?
Boss: You're going to catch it somehow and spread it to us.
Me: Aren't you all vaccinated?
Boss: Everyone but you.
Me: So, if you're vaccinated, how am I going to spread it to you? And if I do get vaccinated, how is that going to keep me from getting it?
Boss: There's no point. You're not changing your mind.

You: Do you believe the vaccine works?

You: You say you do, but your actions by continuing to push me to get it tells me you don't. Which is it?

Ask bossman if he is vaccinated against shingles.

From 2015, pre covid19. Source Link

Quote:

3. Coworker might have shingles in an office with immunocompromised people
I learned this morning that one of our partners "thinks he has shingles." He stated this to one of our staff members and she reported it to me. At first I didn't think anything of it, other than how uncomfortable he must feel. Then word spread among our small office of 12 people (through the one person he told, not by me) and chaos ensued. I have two employees with compromised immune systems and one self-proclaimed "germaphobe" who also happens to have her first grandbaby due, literally, any day now. She has not had chickenpox and has quarantined herself in her office, requesting that he be sent home or not go in her office until after his doctor appointment (scheduled for tomorrow) when we will know for sure what the diagnosis is. She also suggested I let everyone else in the office know what's going on, specifically the two with immune system concerns.

I explained to her that I couldn't require him to leave the office without a confirmed diagnosis from his doctor. I also explained that I can't discuss someone else's medical issues with other employees, nor could I force him to talk to other employees about his own health issues. He plans to work here at the office for the rest of today and tomorrow morning until his appointment. Am I handling this correctly?

Why not go talk to the guy? You say that word has spread and chaos is ensuing, so it would be reasonable to (a) ask him how he's doing and (b) point out that exposure to shingles could be disastrous for some of the people in your office and that it might make sense for him to work from home until he finds out what's going on.

Sucks that you have a boss that can't think critically. If I were his boss that is something that I would remember come evaluation time.

Someone should coin a term for their hypocritical vaccine logic and publish it.

Something like: "circular peer tyranny" -- forcing an individual to perform an action to protect their peers even though their peers have done that act and are already protected.

Vaccinated doesn't mean you can't get it, it's just means you're much less likely.

So if someone who had it had a 5% chance of giving it someone else before, they'd probably give it to 5 out of every 100 people they met. Those 5 would do the same. Now if those 100 people are vaccinated and the vaccine is 80% effective, they're likely to now only give it to 1 person. The growth rates of infections from a probability standpoint are much more manageable and infections peter out faster.

Now if only 50% of those 100 are vaccinated, then that person is likely passing it onto 3. Better than 5, but definitely not ideal.

My question to the boss would be whether they would be willing to pick up the liability for any long term effects of the vaccine.

Yeah, not great reasoning by your boss. I wonder if he actually thinks that, or if he is just trying to nicely tell you he wants you to get vaccinated in order to lower your risk of a serious outcome of Covid infection that would cause you to miss work (thereby increasing burden on other employees) and possibly spend several weeks in ICU riding a vent (which is really gonna be a pain the ass when it's time to negotiate those health insurance premiums for the group next year)?

First off you have a very stupid boss. I question why you wanna work there. He clearly has no rational thinking skills.

Secondly just tell him you got it and get him off your back.

Actually I'm sortof kidding about the second one but stand your ground, dude.

Actually depending on how much moxie the OP has printing out a Jewish gold star and placing it on his desk might just make him realize how stupid he's being.

Leave it with a note saying something like "I see this is where you're going with your tactics. Will this suffice or do I need an arm tattoo as well?"

What are the numbers if the unvaccinated have already had covid? It seems like those calculations presume the unvaccinated have no immunity, which isn't the case if they've already survived covid to begin with.

On Friday leave about 3:00.

Tell boss that you are going to get your shot.

Go to the bar. order a shot.

Repeat in two weeks.

If anyone asks, say " Yes, I've had my shots"

This is my case and what I have told him. I have already had covid and survived it with extremely mild symptoms (mild fever one day, loss of taste and smell for a week. Doesn't get him off my back.

I'm pretty adamant that I'm not getting it and that I don't need it. I'm 30 and in very good shape.

The efficacy of vaccines varies from person to person. 'Breakthrough' infections do occur.

The efficacy of the vaccines are still high.

Can almost promise you this is more about your boss's own personal perception hang ups in how he looks to his peers and bosses than anything else. He's thinking, that they are thinking, his authority and influence are questionable because he has an employee that hasn't conformed to the crowd.

I've lived corporate in senior positions. I know how this works.

So how is he a threat to them? Is he going to kill vaccinated people? It's a bad argument to say how am I going to give you the virus. The argument should be, why are you worried about me giving you essentially a cold if you are vaccinated?
