So how much of the pipeline oil that's now being sent by 18 wheelers will now be derailed by shutting this down?

Saw the Governor of Arkansas say that he was waiving rules and allowing more truckers to carry gas and other refined products to go through his state to those hit. So shutting down the main artery between TN and AR won't help.

That's a very Memphis question to ask, haha... (I grew up there but I "got to Texas as fast as I could!")
It's a crummy city with an inferiority complex.. everytime something happens there with national news implications that gets overlooked or ignored nationally, they're so frustrated! And it really does seem to happen. lolz
Been to Memphis a few times. Mostly for bowl games. Wasn't all that impressed, frankly.
And for as much as it's heralded, Memphis BBQ sucks!

Agree. That was by far the biggest disappointment. We were looking forward to having a great BBQ dinner at the famous Commissary in Germantown. Frankly, it was awful. Little to no smoke taste and their sauces aren't much better. Waste of money. And I have been forced to eat some "famous" barbecue meals from Arkansas as well. I can personally attest that Memphis was even worse than that.

If you have a "crack" that large, I'd bet a bunch of money there are plenty more cracks waiting to be found.

A tip of the cap to the inspector, glad he wasn't half assing it.

I haven't heard it nor found a link yet but TD posters listened to the 911 call from the bridge inspector telling 911 the bridge needed to be closed ASAP.

Can you imagine being on the 911 end of that call?

911: Sir? You want me to send police to shut down access to the I-40 bridge? Why again?

Inspector: There's a crack!! <static>

911: There's a what? A crackhead threatening to jump?

Inspector: No! There is a large break <static>

911: Who is this again???

Rumor has it that ARDOT inspected the bridge and gave it a pass, then TNDOT found the break just a short time later. Way to go Arkansas bridge inspectors....guess someone has to be 50th in the nation.

Considering it is near the center of the bridge, on the TN side or AR side??

Maybe you can't answer this but is it significant that the steel failed away from the rivets, instead of at the rivets???

Yes.

It IS significant.

And I don't know how often they inspect that bridge, but that COMPLETE FAILURE of the steel integrity didn't just happen in a short time.

That bridge was built in the early 60s. The I-55 was built well before that.

So explain to me like I am five, why that is significant. Not Chinese bad steel.

What does that mean?

What does that mean?
Take a toothpick. Hold it tightly in one hand and then push down on the far end until it snaps. Notice it breaks not right where your finger are holding it, but somewhere further down.

Failing at the rivets would be odd unless they were incorrectly installed. Since they've been there forever, they were probably installed correctly.

But, the failure further out shows that the structural integrity of the steel was severely compromised.

And a failure that catastrophic (and yes, it is that, which is why they immediately shut down the bridge) doesn't just happen quickly. That spot has had weakness for awhile. Which should have been caught much earlier.

That kind of a break doesn't just happen overnight in a steel beam of that size. I'm thinking that it's a fatigue crack that has been growing for years and finally progressed to a fracture. The break is aligned in the plane of maximum stress near the fixed end of the beam. This has likely been progressing for years and should have been caught on an annual inspection at some point prior to fracture.

Or at least that's what I learned from the CE205 class I took literally 40 years ago this Fall. Perhaps a real structural engineer could step up and correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, it is likely a fatigue related issue. It occurred in the bottom chord which, at least for txdot, would be a fracture critical component. I'm a structural engineer but my focus is not bridges so I'm sure someone else out there could provide more info.
