I can't be the only person who has noticed this. Younger Americans routinely mispronounce words with certain double consonants in the middle. The best example of this is the word "important."

The youngs don't say important. They say impor'ant.

Button becomes buh'un.

Certain becomes ser'un.

I'm certain this is a sign of our downfall as a nation.

Just start listening. Listen to one Candace Owens podcast. Or listen to Kat Timpf. Or have a conversation with my daughter.

Yes! And vocal fry. It's like they're intentionally trying to sound dumb. I blame the Kardashians.

Certain manners of speech have propagated through these generations over media and that includes quirks like this. The speech is often more effeminate or childlike and carries more elements of pop culture in it.

Also, this annoying phenomenon:

"Important" is definitely the word where it's most noticeable. I don't know where this speech pattern came from.

I have one kid in middle school and one in high school and I have never noticed them or their friends pronouncing words like that. I have heard it in Cockney and some other British accents. I have no idea what the Kardashians sound like.

Maybe they want to be like this guy.

Accents also play a role in pronunciation and there's not much you can do about it. Hell, I probably sound like a hayseed to many on this board and I have an MBA from a top 40 B-School.

Elimination of tt sound is/was a northeastern, particularly South Jersey/Philadelphia inflection.

I talked like that when younger growing up and my parents trained it out of me, mostly...

Kids are probably picking it up from YouTube or hollywood airheads.
