It is a common, widely used American pronunciation.
It was not common in Texas until this recent generation!

Make any 20 year old read this.

Quote:

The three little kittens, they lost their mittens,
And they began to cry,
"Oh, mother dear, we sadly fear,
That we have lost our mittens."
"What! Lost your mittens, you naughty kittens!
Then you shall have no pie."
"Meow, meow, meow."
"Then you shall have no pie."

The best example of this is the word "important."

The youngs don't say important. They say impor'ant.
Weirdly, that is one on tv that I have actually heard people over emphasizing lately. Instead of just important, it become impor TANT.

Thanks for bringing this to light OP. As the dad of two teen daughters this has become on of my biggest pet peeves in life. How ****ing hard is it to pronounce the letter t in the middle of a word?
This also drives me crazy. It is not just Texas. It is every single TV show that isn't scripted. My daughter's pet peeve is people who substitute pacific for specific. I started listening for it, and was surprised how many people do.
