History says we will collect roughly 17.4% of GDP in taxes. It matters not how you do the math, that's just political theatre for those inclined to vote based on emotion rather than logic. So let's effectively raise the gas tax but be prepared for a drop in revenue somewhere else.
A fearful society is a compliant society. That's why Democrats and criminals prefer their victims to be unarmed. Gun Control is not about guns, it's about control.

Hey Pete - it already exists...it's called a gas tax.

I commute 40 miles to work, 80 miles round trip. I'm paying plenty of tax already for that "privilege".

The point behind it is that they're losing money due to higher fuel economy (that the government mandated, which cost us money in more expensive vehicles) and electric vehicles (which government incentivized at our expense) which significantly lowered gas tax revenue.

It makes sense to go this route, not that I agree with it, and it demonstrates very well how the government views tax revenue as its money that it'll get no matter what. It's not your money. Your money is whatever your overlords graciously let you keep, serf.

It dawned on me that I left out an important fact from my post.

In addition to the federal (and state) fuel taxes I'm paying, because of where I live I often have to use the managed toll express lanes if I have any hope of a reasonable time of commute. Those aren't taxes, but they are fees I'm paying to use a better infrastructure option.

Just make every road a toll road. Hell, it's already like that in some major metro areas. The worst offender is probably central Florida around Orlando.

Democrats have slowly pivoted away from a gasoline tax in favor of a mileage tax amid a simultaneous, climate friendly effort to encourage consumers to drive electric cars.

So should we "tax" the natural gas that goes into producing the electric for the electric cars?

The Democrats will probably make it progressive like the income tax. The more you drive the higher the tax. Make it punitive for those that have to drive a lot. It's all about forcing people closer to the urban areas where they can be controlled and monitored more easily.

No thanks.

This has been coming for a while. High-risk auto loan companies install a device on you OBD-II that has a gps and sim card. That way they can track how, when, and where you drive (Loan companies just use it to track down those delinquent in payment). The government has the technology to track this and assess your tax based on the data. They just haven't implemented it yet.

Along with annoying administrative overhead requirements to track/report mileage and then a new bureaucracy to audit those filings, etc. New regulations to make odometers "hack proof", a fee for older cars if they don't replace their odometer with a government approved version, etc. I simple sounding concept will become a new 25 page annual filing with mileage deductions, credits, alternative minimum mileage calculations, and all sorts of social engineering.

I swear government comes up with the most burdensome and inefficient mechanisms to confiscate money from people.
Not to mention the need for a new agency or expansion of an existing agency at the cost of several billions of dollars per year in operating expenses, most of which will be wasted funds just like it is with every existing government agency.

We don't say tribe anymore as its is considered insensitive. Family was also ruled out as many people don't have one.

We now say people of a common goal, however I do think there is room for improvement.

This does not require vehicle monitoring, only roadway monitoring. Toll systems are quite sophisticated these days and they can know your distance traveled along major highways by plate readers, you don't need a device on your car. Believe me, I got a barrage of toll bills in the mail with my toll locations and photos of my plates when my toll pass credit card had an error.

Much of the infrastructure is already in place for roadway monitoring and toll by plate. It also preserves more privacy than vehicle monitoring. It's still somewhat invasive as to a vehicles whereabouts, but not nearly as invasive as vehicle monitoring.

This is what the academics want as part of their central planning for the future. They want mass data collection for the new "global brain" system, where they can use numbers/data to "solve problems" for humanity.

Their vision for a "sustainable" future is for everyone to live in big cities, no one to own their own cars (or housing), and to live as part of the collective hive.

Well this is fine, I mean surely the Dems would negotiate with the opposition and agree to eliminate the gas tax so as to tax everyone equally per mile driven, if this is passed right?

Oh, and maybe they should just pass the tax such that it pays for the next infrastructure 2 trillion dollar thing too. That way, it would be budget neutral. Tax people for moving around, makes sense, and would be 'fair.' Let's see their razor thin house/senate pass such a bill.

What about when one has to drive to the poling place to vote? That's voter suppression.

Think about it. Whose voters primarily live in urban areas or vote by mail and whose tend to live in the suburbs and rural areas and drive to the poling place on election day? The residents of traditionally red counties/communities will now be taxed to drive to the polls or have to vote by mail. One more argument (they'll say) for mail-in voting.

A couple years ago, a semi-retired guy I knew made interstate hot shot deliveries for a little money and to get away from the wife for a time. When he was in Florida, someone on his Facebook joked about him bringing drugs back. He was stopped in Louisiana for absolutely no traffic violation whatsoever and spent 3 hours on the side of the road while they completely strip-searched his truck. They let him go without so much as a warning. Not a single traffic violation to cause the stop and search. he knew his rights, but he also knew it would be a bigger pain in the ass to fight them, so he allowed it. You will never convince him they were not tipped off by his friend's Facebook post and license plate trackers.
