Doesn't matter. He is the most decorated soldier in history of the United States military, and was awarded every single combat medal for valor. Wonderful biography. None of the services wanted him. He was too small in their eyes. His family was poverty stricken. He's from Kingston, Texas in Hunt County.

He suffered fairly bad PTSD after the war, but no one called it that, and was killed in a plane crash in 1971.
