This. California didn't deserve it. Houston and Florida are the heart of the space program. California hasn't done jack outside of spacex which more more about Elon than freaking California.
The shuttle was built in Palmdale California and maybe you have heard of JPL which is the heart of the unmanned space program. What makes no sense is having the Enterprise in NY. The Enterprise should be in CA and the Endeavour should be in Clear Lake.

We operated it for 30 years and all we got is Space Shuttle Consolation

What did NY do to get a shuttle? As I said above, that is the one that makes no sense at all.

Agreed. California on the other hand has had a big hand in the space program over the years. I am no fan of CA but I can at least understand why they got a shuttle. I can also see why the Smithsonian got a shuttle because it is our national museum for air and space. TX and FL are of course no brainers.

I suppose part of the reasoning is that a place like NYC allows more people to see it. Enterprise is the only one I've seen, and it's because I was in New York for other reasons.

Then you plan on moving one of the shuttles from location to location every few years. You don't permanently maroon a shuttle near fricken Harlem. And not a shuttle for Houston or Florida where we've been running the program for 30 years.

At least the one NY got was Enterprise and not a "real" space flown orbiter, but still better than the mock up we got in Houston.

That is why in my earlier post I said CA should get that one. First, it "flew" in CA at Edwards and second, they like things in CA that pretend to be something they really aren't.

New York is even more of a sham. Quite literally, thanks Obama
With a huge assist from Chuck Schumer.

"The senator said NASA gave New York the shuttle for a simple reason. "What NASA was looking for is 'what is the capital of the world? Where will the most people see the shuttle?' In New York; not in Houston, Texas," Schumer said."

"I would say to Congressman Poe what we say in Brooklyn, 'fuhgettaboutit,'" Schumer told Kramer.

Still makes me mad. That shuttle belongs in Houston..

I doubt Colorado is larger than California for space dev. Greater Los Angeles is in my opinion the aerospace hub of the country. At least for cutting edge innovation. With the exception that most big test sites are outside of California.

It seems like all of the design and development work takes place in California.

JPL/Houston should get a solid SpaceX contribution down the road as a museum piece. Elon has been talking about creating a science/tech university.

As the space shuttle was…an abysmal failure in its mission to be affordably/quickly reusable, I think that this future will be more appropriate anyway.

I think it is quite safe to say that the space program has always been heavily influenced by the politicians. I heard that every congressional district was handed a part of the Apollo program. I have seen definitive proof but it highly believable. It is part of why these is so much waste in it just like DoD.
