The FAA is a joke. As their motto goes: "We're not happy until you're not happy."

The FAA should have no involvement. It's not like there are people on board starship. Space X has every incentive in the world to get it right. More su than the FAA.

These are the people who wrote a remote ID drone law, and will prosecute people for it, but never put an actual public system in place that does any of what's required, and can't explain how you can get in full compliance.

How I understand it, drones will be required to transmit location via remote ID (like a plane) but no real framework to do it or likelihood to retrofit existing hardware to become compliant with the law.

This. If you call and speak to the FAA in an attempt to get your business or personal craft in compliance, Noone has gotten an actual answer as to how that will work. Theyve talked about a couple of third party apps, but those don't fulfill the requirements, they're more for nosey karens to track self reporting operators.

It's a ridiculous system, and a ridiculous law, but is a 0rime example of FAA incompetence.

Of course, this is the organization that disqualifies people for life for taking anxiety medications, but still let's octogenarians that land on taxi ways and nearly take out jet liners keep their license.....

Not understanding the confusion. Remote ID is extremely easy to comply with. The biggest gripe (understandably) is from folks whose drone didn't come already equipped. The module isn't cheap.

But I'll leave it at that as I don't want to derail
This thread.

You're talking about ADS-B

Ads-b isn't the same thing as remote Id for drones, and that module weighs more then my 1400mm ocotocopter I built for conematic/heavy lift ..... how do I put it on my 250mm racer again?

Starlink absolutely targets commercial as well.

If SpaceX refused to launch for competing constellation networks they'd be in monopoly territory. There is an argument to be made that Starlink should be separated from the launch business.

Yep, the workboat i am on is getting starlink next week. We will have several commercial accounts with them by the end of the year I suppose.

I think the speculation has been that this is really just about inevitable (the separation). The challenge is the timing as they probably get a much bigger IPO/launch $$$$ when it does once/if they have a regular/exciting cash flow, and the constellation is…at least more complete than it already is.

They also have been plodding through the regulatory 'world' of communications licensing in a lot of countries. They are currently up to around 56, total, which you'd think would be plenty for 'most' businesses but there's a lot of potential revenue/market in 3rd world/remote locales they haven't tapped into yet. They also want to use starlink to fund both Mars, and provide a basis for a constellation around that planet, so a complete/total split is perhaps unlikely near term.

I just started my MBA and my first group project revolves around SpaceX, Starlink specifically. Not bad.

Nobody could afford to fly a constellation of thousands of satellites if they had to pay ULA retail launch prices. I don't even think the business model works at SpaceX's retail launch prices.

Starlink exists because SpaceX can launch the satellites at cost.

Yea without knowing all the ins and outs of the business model I'd venture to guess the commercial business is what pays the bills. The maritime application has to be a significantly large portion of that too I figure.

You can get a module for as cheap as $70 now. It's standalone so you don't need to connect it to power on the UAS.

We've put several of RID modules of a different type on some of our aircraft that cost about $140.

The law is there and the standards are in place for them to be compliant.

But, the law is still pretty stupid.
