They're not entirely dependent because their main nesting ground is farther south, but Kemp's Ridley is still pretty endangered. That map is also misleading without the key:
Distribution of Kemp's ridley sea turtle (L. kempii):
red dot = primary nesting beach
green= primary adult male range
dark blue = primary adult female range
mid-blue = juvenile and subadult range
light blue = accidentals and vagrants (95% juveniles and subadults)
black dots = verified records
Most of that colored area is not typical range, and the actual ranges are not indicative of nesting grounds either.
Well the red dot doesn't look like it is on top of BC. Further, what is a sea turtle gonna do if a starship goes off as it is getting close to a nesting beach, go back out to sea and die? How many sea turtles come in and nest during the day anyway? I prefer my nature much more like Jurassic park, or the ants/bugs around my home; you really have to work to kill them off.
Sea turtles are ancient creatures, right, can't they somehow adapt if their perfect nest location is no longer accessible for a year or 10? Has that never happened before?
A damn rocket launch isn't going to affect the
gender of the sea turtles that hatch.
These people are insane:
Quote:
Tra****en, who specializes in borderland species, said the sex of sea turtle reptiles is determined as the eggs are developing in the sand and is affected by heat. Tra****en said eggs that get hotter tend to produce more females, and that could result in a reduction in sea turtle population in the region if there are not enough males to help populate.
"The eggs are incubated at a certain temperature a sweet spot in the soil so you have an even number of males and females. The higher temperature, the more females you will produce," Tra****en said. "There is no X/Y chromosone. The sex ratio is determined by the eggs."
Friday's blast sent fiery debris falling from the sky in chunks, and the sonic-boom-like sound was heard for miles.
"This will take a long time to know because of a long generation time with these turtles. We might not be aware of this until 15 years down the road that we have all females or all males," Tra****en said.
Further, I don't give a damn about any of the three species, and would be happy if they did go extinct, because it would make the right types of fruitcakes nuts.
