The difference is some of these guys are now getting enough monitization that they can afford to risk thousands of dollars in equipment. The NSF guys also had a camera lens shattered during the static fire.

Yep, pretty sure even Elon said at one point that he used either NSF or LabPadre to keep tabs on what was going on sometimes. SpaceX has permitted this from day one...one of their more endearing qualities is going along with this kind of stuff knowing that it keeps the public engaged and (mostly) rooting for them.

It looks like there was a problem with one of the skates on the Tower 2 chopsticks after the static fire test. Crews set up cranes to unload the carriage and have removed one of the top skates.
