Very cool site showing the time and location of satellite passes for your area.

8m in the Houston area. There's supposed to be a chain of starlink satellites going south to north with the high point at 53 degrees elevation from the east, magnitude 3.

I haven't seen these things in a while. Has anyone else since SpaceX started making them darker & non reflective?

The astrophotography groups are still *****ing about them, but the new flights are dark enough even my 8" newt and 10" sct aren't picking them up once they're at orbit.

They are a pain when first launched, but the current bunch are so dark thefiltering on my capture software boots then

They're nothing like before. I barely picked it up with binoculars after non reflective came about

I think it's a good thing they're making them less visible.

Been a while since I've looked but are iridium flares still a thing?

I don't think there are many iridium satellites still in orbit.

Saw a few several years ago, including over Palo Duro Canyon. Awesome to see.

EDIT: Wiki tells me it was just the 1st Gen satellites that would flare, and there are a lot of them out of service now. Iridium still exists, the new constellation doesn't flare.

Never dealt with the iridium ones with the AP stuff.

It's funny how much whining went on whe the first starlink sats when up, but even the big observatories aren't fighting them at this point from what I understand

So Russia makes an environmental **** show to end all **** shows and it's all ok. But by god Boca Chica could shut down everything.

Got it.

Realistically, from a static fire, fueling, QD, etc. infrastructure perspective, I am not sure they really had a shot at going prior to Q1 2022 anyway.

Not that an 'environmental review' should take this long (or even be political), by any means, but I'm shocked it could be approved and happen in Q1.

Gotta agree, I don't think they realistically had a chance of making it this year, but I think they where pushing to keep excitement up, and probably to keep the screws to the FAA.

I have a hunch bozo losing in court and nasa adamantly sticking with them for HLS, they've been told you WILL play ball

Didn't India pull a similar stunt a few years back? Or was that China?

How long will it take all of that crap to naturally deorbit?

That's the thing, when you blast something already at orbital velocity/in orbit, some portion, whether 10-40 percent or so, gets blasted all over the place and doesn't decay/degrade as much as it would have otherwise.

It takes a long time and is very difficult to track down/predict. Micro-debris, the size of a small nut for instance, can be incredibly deadly in orbit, is the point.

Some of the more realistic science fiction is that we will get trapped by space debris on the planet. Are there any realistic ways to clean up this junk that are economical?

I dunno, I don't think it's exceptionally realistic.

Stuff at LEO decays pretty quick (within 10 years). Some of that writing/speculation is theoretical, and kind of dramatic but we don't need the Chinese/Russians doing stupid stuff just to be tough guys for the next 20 years, for sure.

LEO, sure, I agree with that and that we don't want to encourage that behavior. But it's very feasible that a debris cloud could build above LEO that would not decay for a long, long time. That's more what I'd be worried about, and I'm wondering if there are any potential solutions. But maybe that's a bit of a derail...

There's a variety of emerging tech just not much of a monetary incentive right now.

Yes but far less debris. PRC in 2007 with a **** ton of debris.
