Dear Mask bros

Where was your mask during flu season last year? Because Flu is WAY deadlier than Rona.

It's killed MILLIONS over your life time.

But where was your concern and demand for a mask?

It wasn't there because it wasn't during an election the Dems are desperately trying to steal through pushing fear and panic of a virus LESS deadly than the flu.

So spare me your sanctimonious bull ****

These selfish fools don't give a sh** about the 60-80k elderly and immune compromised that die from the flu each year. Guaranty not a single one will mask up for every flu season for the rest of their lives.

TCTTS, will you pledge to wear a mask for every flu season for the rest of your life? If not, you could literally be killing people out of selfishness by just going about your life.

No. Because we have a vaccine for the flu. So if you chose not to get the vaccine, that's not my problem. But while we're still trying to navigate this novelty virus, which has no vaccine, I'm going to wear a mask in certain public situations, at least until we understand the virus just a bit more, confirm that there's no second wave, etc.

I'm not "virtue signaling," and I'm certainly not a "lib." I'm simply wearing a masks because everything I've read - from experts - says that it helps stop the spread of the virus. And where I live, where 75% or so of people - and 100% of service workers - are wearing masks in public, I'm also doing it as a show of respect. If that makes me a "lemming" or whatever cliched, bullsh*t term you guys want to keep throwing out, so be it.

But if *you* don't want to wear a mask in public, fine. Especially if you live in area of the country that's not a virus hotspot. I've never once said that mask-wearing should be mandatory, or that everyone should be wearing them. I simply made the observation that every proud, chest-bumping, anti-mask-wearing person I've seen, come in contact with, or heard from on this board, has come across as a selfish, condescending assh*le. To be clear, I'm not saying that not wearing a mask makes you an assh*le. I'm saying that I can't stand the attitude of the people flaunting their non-mask-wearing. However annoying you guys think the virtue signalers are being, your anti-mask rhetoric is *just* as bad.

Yeah, it's a weird thing to be proud about. If you're truly proud to not be wearing a mask or genuinely think it makes you macho...you're almost certainly a loser. Unlike you, I haven't witnessed this AT ALL out in the real world, but I have definitely seen it on here...and I may even be guilty of dabbling in the trolling a bit. I think a lot of the "bravado" over not wearing a mask is just an easy way to troll or trigger liberals online. Maybe it's a built up response to people constantly implying you're a selfish pr*ck if you don't wear a mask? Maybe it's partially a f you to the Lina Hidalgo types as well.

That being said...the people who act like you are a selfish pr*ck who doesn't care about killing others if you don't wear a mask are every bit as bad.

So those 60-80k deaths don't count because we have a vaccine? Do vaccines make masks obsolete?! Because vaccines clearly don't prevent people from still getting the flu or dying from it!

As for your follow up post/reply, I read Clay every day, and I love his attitude toward the virus and the media in general. I'm right there with him. Doesn't mean I still can't take precautions, considering where I live.

Yep. And tens of thousands of elderly die every year from the flu. Many probably got the vaccine...but even if they didn't...does their life/death somehow count less?

50-80k people die a year from the flu like clockwork. The pro-mask people should be wearing masks during flu season period if they truly care about their fellow man. Now, saying or implying "f it, let em die if they didn't get a vaccine" is pretty hardcore. Not something I've seen on Texags yet from a mask proponent.

On the bright side, it makes stepping back into the real world that much more refreshing. All I see is people getting along when I go out and about in Houston. No shaming, no confrontations. I've been nothing but impressed with what I have seen. Aside from one sigh and judgmental glare I received from some weirdo in a Santa Fe grocery store recently...and the dude had a loose mask that barely covered his mouth and certainly didn't cover the nose. Some ppl are just big children.

Where did I say, "f/ck it, let 'em die"? You're (obviously) taking my words to the absolute extreme. That said, as a society, we already have preventative measures in place for the flu. We have treatments. We have vaccines. I don't go around wearing masks for flu victims for the same reason I don't go around making sure every fellow driver on the highway is wearing a seat belt. Again, the difference with COVID is that there is no vaccine. And treatments are still in their infancy. There is no "seatbelt" yet, so to speak. So, at least until we know just *bit* more about the situation as a whole, I'm going to continue wearing a mask in *certain* public situations.

In person at least, I'm not seeing any public shaming for not a wearing a mask either, and I hope it stays that way. If you don't want to wear a mask in public, fine. However, if you don't want to wear a mask AND you insist on standing close to me in, say, a line at the grocery store, I'm probably going to say something. Luckily, that hasn't happened yet either.

So not to ruffle more feathers - I am saying this with a chill "tone".

When it comes to my beliefs, I'll side with my father (anesthesiologist) and mother (RN) who says masks are bull**** for the public.

If you want to wear a mask go for it. Just don't give me crap for refusing to do so. Notice how there aren't videos online of people being swarmed by idiots b/c they are wearing a mask? The non-mask folks aren't the true *******s you make them out to be. I don't pound my chest about it in public, I just go on living my life.

Every time I go to the store, I see numerous people constantly touching their mask directly where they have been exhaling all day...and then touching their shopping cart and countless items in the store. Might as well be licking your hands and then touching everything in site. Or maybe the virus can't live in moist germ riddled areas like the front of a mask? I'm no scientist.

Liberals are fun to trigger...I am guilty of it at times. And openly saying you will never wear a mask is one of the easiest ways to trigger your beloved brethren...especially the spiteful hyper-judgmental ones. It's cheap, it's low rent, it requires zero skill. But...it's like fishing with dynamite.

I don't know a single person who is "proud" of not wearing a mask or brags about it. It's just something to shove in the corona bros faces online. I bet many of those WWII or Vietnam era soldiers would have gladly joined in on the razzing. Not saying it's right.

you only have to turn on the news every day to feel this way - it is an understandable reaction to this media age.

but (and sorry for a lecture if it comes across that way) this is a very dangerous path of thinking that we have to resist.

trusting citizens to behave like adults and manage their affairs is the underpinning of every principal this country is founded upon.

the VAST majority of the American people adopted all the social distancing and stay-at-home policies without complaint. the cases of early 'idiot American' behavior were few and far between, and well covered (Florida spring breakers etc).

only when data emerged around, over, and through the wall of media fear mongering, did Americans justifiably say 'enough' and begin behaving independently.

Americans are the most benevolent, charitable, and civic minded people on earth. Any number of metrics show this. We have to avoid this media driven narrative that Americans are fools and cannot be trusted with their own well being. That path of thinking leads to tyranny.

Big problem is that both sides (you included) paint with too broad of a brush. Sometimes I am guilty of it, but if there's one thing that law school taught me, it was how to see things from both sides to make a halfway decent argument rather than just stating things in absolutes.

People are also unable to separate arguing based on emotions vs facts. They are both necessary, but the other tends to provide a more accurate context than the other.

Seems very obvious the whole mask thing is not about preventing the spread of disease as those in government do not care if we die or get sick (see Cuomo shipping kung flu positives to nursing homes) but rather the whole thing is a sh*t test to see what the citizenry will permit the government to do.

I expect every flu season moving forward the government will suggest we mask up for meemaw. After that, they will push the "Contact Tracing" further and further away from its original scope until it applies to everything a la the patriot act. They push all of this with rhetorical arguments to shame those who do not comply (just like the patriot act, afterall if you're against the government preventing a terrorist attack you must be a filthy terrorist yourself).

Thanks, but no thanks. I'm no Karen/Todd, but if we're in a line, and you insist on breathing on me without a masks, during a pandemic, if I can't make the space myself, I'm 100% going to politely ask you to move back. And if you're implying that things will escalate from there, I can certainly hold my own.

. You know most people don't get it and it's only about 40% effective in the best years...but don't let facts get in the way of your ignorance.

Wow 10 pages already.

It's simple folks. Wear a mask if it makes you feel comfortable or a location requires it. Be respectful of people who don't wear masks.

If you don't wear a mask, be respectful of those that do and try to keep 6' away.

Break time over - now both irrational sides get after it and see if we can hit 20 pages by 5PM today.

If you don't want to wear a mask in public, fine. However, if you don't want to wear a mask AND you insist on standing close to me in, say, a line at the grocery store, I'm probably going to say something. Luckily, that hasn't happened yet either.
Free advice: I think that's a bad idea.

Isn't it Karen & Brad?

When did Todd get drug into this?

Just took my son to the Drs office in Dallas. Sign said masks are required. Performed an experiment, neither of us wore one and no one said a thing to us. Dr was even talking about how overblown all the restrictions were especially for young kids who aren't at risk at all. Said school should happen normally in the fall if people are being rational.

Look, I get not wanting to wear a mask in public, when out and about in general, especially if wherever you live isn't all that hard hit by the virus. But I will never understand this approach of purposely not wearing a mask in a place of business that specifically asks you to do so, as an attempt to push buttons or simply see if you can get away with it. This is the crap I'm talking about. Even most of the anti-mask people in this very thread have said they comply when a business requires it. I just genuinely don't understand this mindset. For thrills, do you also go shirtless and shoeless into restaurants? Do you tell bakeries you're gay just to see if they'll make a wedding cake for you? I'm not even trying to make this about masks, specifically, but rather showing a simple sign of respect.

Ha, Brad works too. I've just seen Todd used recently, along with Steve.

LOL so you are concerned about them being too close and spreading droplets and you are going to engage in conversation and potentially get physical with them. Makes sense. Science right!

According to most here, this whole thing is a hoax anyway, so why not?
