New cases is because of more testing. For example we had a new confirmed case here that was listed as recovered the same day it was confirmed.

The deaths suck though.

Despite the increase in testing, the death rate has increased to 2.7%....not good.

New cases is because the virus is spreading

The only number worth really paying attention to is this ratio

Deaths/(deaths plus recovered). That number has steadily creeped up to an astonishing 21%. That number has steadily grown and should, God willing, peak soon. As testing proliferates and more people overcome the illness that ratio will approach the true death rate as an asymptote. That 21% number needs to drop and needs to drop fast or the world is going to really hurt.

We are grossly undercounting the recovered number if we're not getting tests of all the "mild" cases.

Our numbers in Texas have to be a lot worse. Abbott saying we'll soon be able to test "10,000 cases a week". That ain't gonna cut it. I heard of the first death of someone of someone I knew. 45 year old woman whose kidneys stopped working. Her husband is apparently on a vent now too. Apparently increased viral load is why doctor's and family spread are getting so sucks. Such horse***** Nuke China for all I care.

Keep in mind those are the reported cases. So many people still unable to get tested even despite showing symptoms.

If more people are getting sick than are getting a test the rate will skew towards the most severe cases. Not trying to downplay the severity.

I went to the liquor store today to grab a few essentials before **** really hits the fan in Texas. Apparently the lady that I saw walking to her car when I pulled up had people living with her that had just gotten in from Louisiana, she and everyone in the household were supposed to remain in quarantine but apparently they needed some alcohol. I walked in and the employees were spraying sanitizer over everything. They said she didn't cough while she was in the store but I felt like taking no chances, bathed my hands in 85% Ethanol/Isopropanol and immediately took a shower when I got home. Really hope it isn't aerosolized by breathing because I walked through an area she was in probably 30-60s after she was (I have stayed 6-12 feet from all humans who don't live in my house).

The recovered number relies on the fact that, by definition, a formerly positive patient records not one, but two negative tests.

Given how stingy we are about the tests in the first place due to supply constraints and number of processed tests we are capable on the front end...the recovered number is completely unknowable at best, and a completely disregarded stat at worst. Even counting among them the positive test but "no symptoms for 3+ days" plus the "never tested as positive with no symptoms 3+ days", plus the "felt sore, but didnt seek medical help" plus the asymptomatic bucket.

The deaths, however, are completely verifiable. It's simply a patient that tested positive that is no longer alive.

So the numerator is within near certainty (purely by definition of what makes it a COVID19 death) and the denominator is a complete guess that we arent even really trying to calculate or follow up with at this time.

The math is really fuzzy. If we were really worried about accuracy, we would concentrate on # of cases, # of hospitalizations, # of critical, deaths.

But the really disturbing thing in all of this is that we seem to have a daily "scoreboard" for this pandemic, that seems to be driving both policy decisions and human behavior. That should be alarming to more people on a broader scale. This is "Dancing with the Stars" type reality show where people are dying and people are tuning in to give their take on how good or bad this is or isnt...it's macabre to say the least.

Hopefully in 7 days. I think that should get through the lag of deaths to new cases

Take this seriously folks, stock up as much as you can (without hoarding of course). It's going to get rough this month.

"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill
