The restart of China is running into some hiccups

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/31/china-gets-mixed-results-in-its-attempt-to-lift-lockdown

But the road to recovery has not been without bumps. Fugong fuchan ("resuming work, resuming production"), the government mantra of the past few weeks, has proceeded in fits and starts. Officials have struggled to restart the economy after an unprecedented nationwide shutdown, while also trying to prevent another outbreak.

Cinemas, briefly reopened with plans to lure customers back with Harry Potter in 3D, were ordered to shut again. In Shanghai, indoor tourist attractions have again been suspended. The city of Jinzhou, in Liaoning province, said on Monday that clubs, karaoke bars, internet cafes and any cultural venue "where people gather" could not reopen. Businesses that had opened their doors again were told to suspend operations immediately.

Sichuan province abruptly ordered all entertainment venues to shut, interrupting karaoke bar patrons mid-song. One resident wrote online of the experience: "I was halfway through before I was told to stop immediately. At least I got to sing for a bit."

While officials say the virus has been beaten, not everyone appears to believe it. Last week, after authorities lifted restrictions in Hubei province, the centre of the outbreak, clashes broke out when residents were blocked from entering the neighbouring province of Jiangxi. Videos posted on social media showed crowds walking toward a line of riot police, overturning police cars and shouting: "Hubei, let's go!

Why does the media think every state will follow the same curve as NYC? NYC has a very different lifestyle and is completely urbanized with many people living next to each other in apartments, in transportation and in virtually every other facet of their lifestyle. We here in Texas are spread out and drive in separate cars and have a lot more space to keep our distance. I highly doubt we will come anywhere close to what they are going through with this virus. I'm tired of hearing many in the media saying we should be doing the same type of shutdown as NYC.
I am guessing you live in a suburb somewhere, don't you?

We will have pockets of outbreaks. There are lots of multifamily residential properties with 100-500 units throughout the state. Hard to keep your distance in those places.

Cruise ships without the water.

We will probably see big outbreaks in poorer areas. Densely populated areas with little to no respect for law or education. For instance: east Fort Worth along Lancaster Ave/Oakland Blvd, Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Fair Park, areas in Arlington along I-30, Las Vegas trail south of 30 in Fort Worth, Park Lane and Greenville in Dallas, South Dallas along Westmoreland/Kiest Blvd, etc.

Obviously I know DFW area better than most, the same pattern will repeat in Houston, San Antonio, El Paso and Austin. To a lesser extent in Lubbock, Beaumont, Waco, Killeen, and other smaller towns.

The poor will get hit hard with this. Will they actually get counted as a confirmed case if they don't get tested?

Major MSM outlets and many prominent libs and lib politicians were saying it was not a big deal and that Trump was a racist for restricting travel from China. And lately they've been caught parroting Chinese propaganda...Sorry Shanked, as "dumb" as you think Trump is, your people are always at least twice as stupid and 10x as pathetic.

Still thinking the Chi-Com government has their fingers in this; they are looking for weaknesses in our lifestyle and our government and I guarantee they will attempt to exploit those weaknesses when they are ready to make their move.

I live in an apartment in Las Colinas where I get in my car every day and drive to my "essential" job by myself. I stop to get a cup coffee at Racetrac without having to get close to anyone although there is risk from touching the coffee maker. For lunch I can go grab food at a drive-thru with minimal interractions with anyone. Then I drive home to my apt and take a walk around Lake Carolyn for my exercise since all the gyms are closed. I never get real close to anyone all day which is completely different then getting on a subway or a bus and bumping against people on sidewalks and standing in crowded cafes waiting to get lunch. We have a totally diiferent lifestyle here verus NYC and I would expect the virus spread to reflect that.

Most of those on the left have been siding with the experts on this throughout rather than watching the right wing pundits on Fox News, and then shooting off a tweet parroting their lines that this is no worse than the flu.

Certainly plausible, but why wouldn't they be more targeted with it? Why create enemies with the entire world when you can be more precise with a "controlled" release of a pandemic?

I'm certainly not dismissing the possibility, I just question the vehicle they used to get it here, unless it's plausible deniability.

I do wonder what the long term ramifications are for China... I think the ***** in our armor has been our dependence on China and it's been exposed. I have a hard time believing we and several other countries, will go back to business as usual with China. But you never know. People like cheap stuff and they make it.

I just hope we hold the CCP accountable if we find out this could have been prevented or minimized.

My favorite response is the "Trump was called a racist for restricting travel from China" when it was maybe a handful of Dems that disagreed with it and all it did was restrict non-US citizens. US citizens were free to travel to China and back as they pleased.

I hadn't watched Fox News in years aside from SOTU addresses and elections but i started watching them a bit during this. Trust me, they are hyping this sh** up like everyone else...it's good for ratings. But they actually address the economic implications too.

The sharpness of the curve isn't the point.

New York is going through hell because of their population density, yes, but everyone goes to the grocery store, everyone goes to restaurants, everyone sends their kids to school, and on and on...

The point is it's just happening faster in New York because they're so close together. That doesn't stop the same thing happening, just more slowly, everywhere else.

The **** it was. That's a lie. All the "Hug a Chinese!" bull**** was your dims' response to Trump's serious order.

Now truthfully, we couldn't expect the dims to be up to speed on the threat at the time because those limited brain cells were all consumed by impeachment and GET TRUMP! Nothing serious was happening in Congress because one party was fully invested in subverting the will of the American people.

Nice revisionist history, though.

Am I the only on that thinks if we keep this under 200,000 deaths, we've actually done a pretty darn good job at containing this thing as a country? Yes mistakes were made at all levels but all in all 200,000 is much, much better than the 2.2 million deaths estimated at the beginning. If we can keep this below 100k deaths that would be <5% of initial 'do nothing' estimates. Think about that. And while the government has done plenty of overreaching during this process, businesses, communities and families have come together to do a whole lot of good things with lots of imperfect information and uncertain outcomes.

I as I've been telling the kids,we're doing this to help our community and we're avoiding each other so we can play with each other during the summer. It's hard to know if it was worth it but I'll admit, if there's no college football come fall, I may slide down the 'it wasn't worth it' rail pretty fast.

Very interesting research reported by Nature:

Quote:

A multicenter collaborative effort has generated an extensive target list for pharmacological repurposing trials, which should keep researchers busy for some time. Using 26 cloned viral proteins as bait in an affinity purification mass spectrometry screen, the authors fished out 332 interacting human proteins, thus leading to the identification of 69 different US Food and Drug Administrationapproved drugs that could potentially disrupt the virushost interactome. In addition to the expected hits in antiviral immunity pathways, a wide range of cellular processes are implicated, including transcription, translation, trafficking and protein turnover. This plethora of promising compounds will require extensive in vivo validation. Ralph Baric and colleagues focused on beta-D-N4-hydroxycytidine (NHC), a ribonucleoside analog previously shown to have antiviral effects against a broad range of RNA viruses. NHC decreased the in vitro replication of MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2, and was protective in vivo in a mouse model of SARS-CoV infection. Importantly, the study also suggests that remdesivir-resistant mutants may have enhanced sensitivity to NHC.

Its about 10x worse than the flu but not a statistically life threatening illness to anyone under the age of 35-40 (unless you have a co-morbidity).

You want people to understand the actual dangers so you don't have a bunch of healthy adults swamping hospitals spreading it to others, or catching it when they didn't even have it, and overwhelming the system. You want them to stay home, monitor their condition, and treat it like the flu.

Don't feed the hysteria, bro.
