The problem with Italy is the southern part of the country hasn't had a lot of cases.

If it starts spreading there, and they expect it to do so because of people who have fled from the north, even after the lock down was put into place.

And just like in the US, they expect most of the people who will spread it around are college students.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Retirement accounts already destroyed. I personally know several Small businesses and dental practices that have already started the process of bankruptcy. I know several people who have been laid off, furloughed or have had their salary reduced by 20% or 30%. Don't know a single person with COVID. The next jobs report will be very sad.

With regards to economic impact of COVID, I found this interesting article about stock market performance during the Spanish Flu.

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/market-behavior-a-century-ago-suggests-the-worst-could-be-over-for-stocks-if-not-for-the-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-03-19

Sharp 33% decline during the initial outbreak in 1917, but then back to previous levels by 1919.

The meme is about preventing one or the other. So yes, trying to prevent people from suffering from Covid will result in more people suffering from financial pain.

If you did absolutely nothing to stop the virus, more people would suffer from the virus than financial hardship.

Again, this is the whole thread in a nutshell.

Dallas may end up closing city parks and trails if people don't start abiding by the social distancing requirements. People simply aren't going to take these precautions on their own.

Abbott:

25,483 Texans tested for COVID19
Of those tested, 2,552 confirmed positive
118 counties where someone tested positive
176 people in hospitals who have tested positive
34 fatalities connected to COVID19 (when I say connection, people who may have COVID19 but also a host of other medical ailments)

On average, less than 10% people who were tested test positive; 90% people who tested for COVID19 test negative
Of people who are tested, less than 10% who test positive are going to hospitals; 90% people who test positive are not needing to go to a hospital
Most of these numbers are results of personal interactions before distancing practices

Number of hospital beds available for COVID19 positive patients doubled
March 18: 8,100 hospital beds for COVID19
March 26: 16,000 beds for COVID19 patients
Increase does not include increased potential occupancy rooms as a result of my other EO requiring the doubling of beds in rooms capable of having two beds
Number of available beds and rooms should be even larger than the number provided today

Number of Texans hospitalized with connection to COVID19 is less than 2% of available hospital room capacity; COVID hospital vacancy rate of 98%
Plenty of hospital capacity for COVID19 today

Existing hospitals will continue to be primary location for those in need

Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas will be set up to expand healthcare facilities
As we gather today, in the KBHCC, already large scale medical kits & equipment that exists
Capacity for 250 beds with plenty of room to massively expand that number if needed

Additional executive orders:
Massive spread in New Orleans/Louisiana
Prior EO about travel from New Orleans covered air travel; Updating EO to also include travel by road from any location in the State of Louisiana; does not apply to commercial activity, military service, emergency/health response, critical infrastructure functions

Expanding EO requiring quarantine of passengers flying into Texas to include more locations: Miami, FL; Atlanta, GA; Detroit, MI; Chicago, IL; any air travel from CA and Washington State

Issuing EO to stop the release of dangerous felons from prisons & jails in Texas. Releasing dangerous criminals is not the right solution. Doing so now is prohibited by law.

Probably trying to do something more draconian before Brazos County does a full on lock down, maybe even going as far as a "Wuhan Style Lock Down".

Moscow on lockdown.

Quote:

Moscow has ordered citizens to self-isolate starting Monday, despite the Russian government's claims that the country is not facing a coronavirus epidemic.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that local officials will institute a system of special passes that will allow people to leave their homes.

Quote:

Possible reasons to leave home, according to the officials, will include: seeking emergency medical help, compulsory travel to work, shopping at the "nearest" pharmacy or food shop, walking pets "no more than 100 meters [about 110 yards] from the house" and taking out household garbage.

The government will require people to keep a social distance of about 5 feet from each other.

I'm surprised some of the larger restaurant groups or retailers haven't tried to overturn or seek less restrictive measures. There have to be some sympathetic judges who would entertain some middle ground.

This isn't a game. The sooner we get full compliance, the sooner community spread will stop, and the sooner everything can get back to normal. People that choose to ignore all of this is just making it harder on everyone.

I doubt many of them want to rattle the cages that much since I'd bet 75% of them staying open for takeout are violating the required social distancing.

There were a couple of facebook threads where you had restaurants managers/owners basically acknowledging that there's no way they can handle takeout/curbside orders in a kitchen of their size while adhering to the policies.

Not chiming in on whether not the policies are justified or not, just saying I doubt many of them want to challenege anything right now and risk being told they have to completely close.

Here is a letter Boris Johnson released today to the general public. I really do admire his candar in informing people of the situation. He isn't sugar coating anything at all. I never agreed with much of anything of his politics, though his leadership qualities are refreshing in this crisis.

Quote:

I am writing to you to update you on the steps we are taking to combat coronavirus.

In just a few short weeks, everyday life in this country has changed dramatically. We all feel the profound impact of coronavirus not just on ourselves, but on our loved ones and our communities.

I understand completely the difficulties this disruption has caused to your lives, businesses and jobs. But the action we have taken is absolutely necessary, for one very simple reason.

If too many people become seriously unwell at one time, the NHS will be unable to cope. This will cost lives. We must slow the spread of the disease, and reduce the number of people needing hospital treatment in order to save as many lives as possible.

That is why we are giving one simple instruction - you must stay at home.

You should not meet friends or relatives who do not live in your home. You may only leave your home for very limited purposes, such as buying food and medicine, exercising once a day and seeking medical attention. You can travel to and from work but should work from home if you can.

When you do have to leave your home, you should ensure, wherever possible, that you are two metres apart from anyone outside of your household.

These rules must be observed. So, if people break the rules, the police will issue fines and disperse gatherings.

I know many of you will be deeply worried about the financial impact on you and your family. The government will do whatever it takes to help you make ends meet and put food on the table.

The enclosed leaflet sets out more detail about the support available and the rules you need to follow. You can also find the latest advice at gov.uk/coronavirus

From the start, we have sought to put in the right measures at the right time. We will not hesitate to go further if that is what the scientific and medical advice tells us we must do.

It's important for me to level with you - we know things will get worse before they get better. But we are making the right preparations, and the more we all follow the rules, the fewer lives will be lost and the sooner life can return to normal.

I want to thank everyone who is working flat out to beat the virus, in particular the staff in our fantastic NHS and care sector across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It has been truly inspirational to see our doctors, nurses and other carers rise magnificently to the needs of the hour.

Thousands of retired doctors and nurses are returning to the NHS - and hundreds of thousands of citizens are volunteering to help the most vulnerable. It is with that great British spirit that we will beat coronavirus and we will beat it together.

That is why, at this moment of national emergency, I urge you, please, to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.

Boris Johnson
