If he is 42 and has been on combat deployments for the past 20 years it is almost 100% certain that he has underlying conditions. Most don't know until they start getting the detailed test during retirement

I think it's more likely that like everyone has said from the beginning, this is disease that can make anyone very sick regardless of age, just in some age ranges, it's very unlikely you will get sick.

However, as the numbers of symptomatic cases continues to skyrocket, the 1 in 100 (1 in 1000?) worst case scenarios will become a lot more frequent as the law of large numbers makes them start to pile up.

That was poor naming, but I think it's been pretty well established for the past week that mild is anything, including pneumonia, that doesn't require hospitalization.

Those stories just aren't talked about

Without knowing the denominator, percentages are useless. I can say 90% of those infected with the virus are asymptomatic just as you can use stats to highlight doom and gloom.

Unless there is universal testing, there is literally no way to know any percentages accurately.

If someone is infected and is asymptomatic or has mild symptoms, nobody would click on the reports or their stories

Early on, non serious cases were being identified as cases that did not require ventilators. So those "mild" cases had quite a range

I don't think it's a problem of deception, I think it's a problem of perception. As an example, many here have come to the conclusion that since most of the deaths are in older individuals younger people are not effected, and then that morphed into the idea that it's mild for younger people and no big deal overall. That's easy for them to buy into because it supports their opinion that isolation and quarantine efforts are bad for the economy and we shouldn't be doing them because this is no big deal for younger people. It becomes self perpetuating at that point

Because the vast majority of those people, as well as the people who are asymptomatic, don't get tested so they don't know they had it.

I think our intelligence services know the truth and that drives our response. What the real numbers are should remain classified until the is over then publicized when we relocate manufacturing to Central America.

Was talking with a co-worker this morning and his buddy in Houston has it. He's in his mid 30's and very fit, but he said his lungs are killing him and he's having a hard time.

Hard time because if the illness or because he's acutely aware of his symptoms due to his high level of fitness? Also when you're really fit and active, downtime due to illness or injury can be mentally challenging as well.

The data from other countries is definitely pointing toward that. And it absolutely fits with the relatively low number of deaths to this point considering how long it's been in the US.
