Didn't see it in this thread, but Italy shipped the US 500k Coronavirus testing kits yesterday:

https://www.defenseone.com/threats/2020/03/us-air-force-flew-half-million-coronavirus-test-kits-italy-tennessee/163879/?oref=DefenseOneTCO

Quote:

Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman confirmed the shipment on board an Air National Guard aircraft. The plane carried "swabs" that are used in the COVID-19 testing process, he said during a Wednesday afternoon briefing at the Pentagon.

"There's multiple parts to testing," Air Force Brig. Gen. Dr. Paul Friedrichs, the Joint Staff surgeon, said at the same briefing. "The first is the swabs that are used to collect the sample from the individual who's being tested, then there's a liquid that you put the swab into. That's what composed what we brought over from Italy."

Pretty cool stuff, but also kinda sad that we're requiring help from Italy of all places.

Edit: Maybe they were just shipped from Italy, and not from the Italians. Can't quite tell from the story.

People on this thread assured me that Italy was in fact a 3rd world country.

We're also seeing the backlog of results come in. There were two backlogs.

1) Test Kits
2) Labs that could read test kits.

Right now, the gate is opening for #2 and we will see a large spike in positive results.

Crisanti also warned Sky News that, "for every patient that shows symptoms for COVID-19 there were about 10 who don't."

Are any of those 10 people presymptomatic? i.e. they were tested and then after started showing symptoms?

Third one too, places with sufficient PPE or manpower to safely collect samples. A lot of the labs who stepped up to do testing only had phlebotomists, and local doctors offices didn't have PPE.

Don't want to read too much into that number. While obviously there's a real spike happening in NY, if you've got flu like symptoms, you're sure as **** gonna see the doctor right now... whereas you might just try and tough it out at home otherwise.

In Houston at a Drive thru testing facility.

We have thousands of labs that could do the tests(most major hospital's in house labs could do them). It's the CDC bureaucracy that has been slow to approve tests that don't meet their "standards." Hell we could have just adopted South Korea's testing protocols but we have to let the CDC pretend like they are a premier institution on disease control when they're really just another money hungry bureaucracy.

Are they actually doing serology tests with any frequency?

I think we have a vernacular problem. The term "daily infection" suggests that these are new people being infected daily, when in reality, it has to be more likely that these are infections that are discovered in progress, as well as new infections. It's not that 5,000 more people were infected on Wednesday, it's that 5,000 more infections were identified on Wednesday. Consequently, as testing ramps up, it necessarily follows that "daily infections" will increase, revealing that the virus is already widespread.

Or am I misunderstanding what that term means entirely?

Let's say they are able to run and get results for thousands a day.

How are patients notified? Wouldn't that be the 4th bottleneck?

I really believe that in the near future testing positive will mean very little except staying away from high risk people. Just like the flu and other viruses.

Not sure to be honest but I'm pretty sure that data will be available at some point since they were able to test everyone in their city.

No one with any accuracy would be using "daily infection" as anything other than a forward looking estimate. "Confirmed Cases" and "new confirmed cases" are what you'd actually call the numbers being reported.

No - the labs that were going to run the test were only equipped to take blood samples, and the CDC kit required a swab, so the labs said - send us a sample and we'll test it. Then people said ok where do I go to get tested? And there was a collective shrug.
Zobel

You're right, it's correctly: confirmed cases. But if we're testing the same way consistently (big if) it should track daily new cases closely (at a delay - actually at a ~5 day delay for onset of symptoms).

Right, that was my understanding, but your wording confused me. Thanks for confirming.

New York is 0.1576 per 1000, doesn't sound serious yet.

HIPAA. If we didn't have it we could have the cool South Korean coronovirus tracking app.

This seems so irrelevant when most people kick it test. I've had a fever for six days now and I've been very fatigued but my doctor says they'll have a test to give me so I don't really know if I have it or not. There are a lot of people in my situation right now

I don't give a single solitary f--- if the FDA hasn't approved chloroquine for COVID19. Docs are gonna use it off label and tell the FDA to get bent. And YOU have no idea if the FDA has or hasn't approved it or who in the FDA makes that call or if the FDA left hand knows what the right is doing. Or who told President Trump that.

Take the partisan politics out of it.

Lots of people who aren't executives here. Executives deal in real outcomes and not constructionist arguments. Trump was saying they have a lot of history with the drug and knows how it will behave, that a lot of people are taking it and they know what the side effects are.

This is the same "lol. Google isn't fighting coronavirus a company they bought is fighting coronavirus it isn't the same"
