Italy is in trouble. But everyone remember it's fake news, and there is no way it can happen in the USA.

Italy sucks at dealing with the flu apparently.
My religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me. That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave.

I will say, as someone who is currently "immuno-suppressed" I have developed a case of corona-hands from so much hand washing. very dry, cracked with micro fissures in spite of a liberal use of hand lotion after thact.
How often are you washing your hands?

I'm not immunosuppressed, but my immune system is crappy so I am also washing hands, wiping everything down and using hand sanitizer between hand washing and I haven't had this happen, yet. It's coming I know.

GEORGIA (WJBF) A member of Gov. Brian Kemp's Coronavirus Task Force has confirmed that the state of Georgia has its first death from the 2019 novel coronavirus.

Among 31 positive cases, this is the first death recorded.

The victim was a 67-year-old man, hospitalized at WellStar Kennestone in Marietta. He tested positive for COVID-19 on March 7th. The victim also reportedly had other underlying medical conditions.

"Marty, the girls, and I are praying for the family and loved ones of this individual during this incredibly difficult time," said Governor Kemp. "I know the medical professionals on site did everything that they could, and I greatly appreciate their efforts. As our state continues to address this pandemic, I urge Georgians to remain calm and support their neighbors and communities. We are in this fight together."

Hyvee was out of bottles of white vinegar, shells and cheese, frozen broccoli, beef jerky (STILL), baby wipes, lysol, and Cadbury Creme Eggs (STILL).

People need to calm down.

And when I see someone with a case of canned chili and lots of toilet paper, that purchase makes sense to me.

I expect nothing less from a garbage country like Iran.

Heck the "fastest hospital ever built" in china was basically a mass grave too, they just went above ground with it.

I am frugal mom.
I can make bread, cookies, tortillas (flour and corn), scones, cornbread, and biscuits for the next 6 months.
I also have a 20 pound (mostly, I have used some) bag of Jasmine rice as well as various pounds of dried beans. I am also growing lettuce already and will be planting the good stuff as soon as I know it isn't going to snow on them.

I have the junk food stash hidden from the hungry stomachs of 5th grade boys.

Shelf stable milk isn't the best, but it works for mac and cheese and french toast.

This is BY FAR and I mean BY FAR the best information I've heard about the virus .. a Dr giving real time information on the virus based on what they know. Says stay away from the media who are like wild hyenas feasting on a dead water buffalo. But he says we need to keep our distance and not do things we don't need to do. Says hoarding mask are stupid. Very sensible response, he gives daily updates. He predicts cases will go way up once testing becomes more available which is very very soon.

Excerpts from WSJ article today.

  • Some hospital are getting kits so they can do results in hours
  • Others sending specimens to commercial labs for analysis for 3-4 day results
  • Each state / county / healthcare provider has its own policy who will receive a test. Some limiting it to those at severe risk only
  • "Do you only test high-risk patients? Do you test moderate-risk patients with asthma? This is a real public-health dilemma, when you have to ration testing" - chief medical officer of a telemedicine company
  • Oregon only had enough material to test 65 people on Monday. Tuesday they got more stuff to do 4800 more test. They're limiting tests based on "certain criteria, such as being hospitalized."
  • RNA extraction materials and other components are having supply constraints, production of testing gear are plants in Germany, Spain, and Maryland
  • Physicans on front line asking how to get access to kits.
  • Patients struggling to know where to go to get samples taken, because commercial labs aren't letting them go to centers, and local practices are saying they don't have enough PPE for staff members to take samples.
  • CDC kits only got fixed last week, Public health labs only got them "in recent days"
  • Some hospitals and academic test centers are just doing their own testing, developing their own. Until they have more capacity, limiting their testing to those at highest risk AND who have had close contact with an infected person.
  • Many commercial labs coming online with 1000+ per day capacity, but are using couriers to collect specimens.
  • BioReference test will cost $55
  • "Given the limits on testing" not everyone should be tested

What a clown show.

given the state of things, this is true. if you pop a fever or even get a tickle in your throat, you should stay home and call your doctor, monitor the situation and treat the symptoms.

if you get shortness of breath, go directly to the hospital. you'll get a CT and they'll start the protocols.

At this point int the US I don't see the huge benefit of testing and why that seems to be the focus. You are either sick or not. If not you aren't going to be tested anyway, if sick just stay home and hope you don't need hospitalization.

fyi: UK prime minister said they think UK is 4-5 weeks behind Italy. And they are behind Germany (and other countries) when looking at the outbreak curves. But this is when looking at the un-mitigated curves; they want to mitigate it and flatten the curve. They predict the worst to be at 12-14 weeks with 95% infected and they said some +/- on the weeks, then they mentioned 50% infected but I don't remember how far out they said

It matters a lot for the healthcare workers that have to treat those patients. How you set up the hospital to prevent cross contamination.

It also mattered early on to aggressively trace contacts and isolate / quarantine people. I think we missed tbat boat now.

Wouldn't even go if you can avoid it. Walk to end of terminal, find distant/low volume bathrooms. Use paper towels, avoid the dyson jet blower / virus dispersers.
