I just don't know why we are bothering with this "presumptive" language then. Warranted or not, the panic has set in. Yesterday with all the cancellations marked a point of no return. I seriously think that if we are going to go down this path, we should just assume everyone is infected or will be infected and shut down the country.

Stop messing around with testing and treat the worst cases and let the rest of us survive off of our own immune systems the best we can.

That is what is going to happen anyway.

Again, for the 1,000th time, the efforts are to flatten the infection curve, not prevent it. Letting it run wild unabated is the worst thing we can do.

Having thousands of young people with mild cases, freaking out, heading to the ER overwhelms the system too.

Understanding your risk as a young adult helps the system, not hurts it.

Wouldn't that argue in favor of having those thousands of young people practice social distancing so they don't get it and thus don't go to the ER?

If we take the Spanish Flu as a worst case scenario, which is probably as reasonable assumption, even bad times last ~1 month. The disease comes in, population gets hammered, everyone who is going to get it gets it, and then it is gone as quickly as it came.

Since we are not operating in the information vacuum they were, it will almost certainly be less acute in terms of time than it was 100 years ago. Which means the shock to the healthcare system should be less. That's a good thing. And this does NOT have the danger to the young and otherwise health young adults that Spanish Flu has. That's also good.

The bad thing is that worst case presents a 2-3% fatality and millions of deaths worldwide over 2 years. But, if we flip that, that means 98% of people who get it will be just fine. In this case its probably like 99% or higher.

Take it in stride, sun will rise tomorrow and the day after that. Wash your hands, try to distance yourself from others, encourage people around you, and do your part to flatten the curve. This is the message we all need to be spreading.

This is scary to see how we are reacting to a mild virus. The next legitimate virus is going to end our soft nation.

We should be isolating our vulnerable. Not quarantining our healthy. This panic (shutting down the economy) is going to do way more damage to everyone than the virus would have.
Why do you think you know what to do better than the people who actually study this?

Most of the closures thus far have been political CYA/PR moves made from fear rather than recommended by experts. At some point in the near future those closures may well be recommended by experts in those communities, but at this point the panicky reactions are largely outpacing the actual need for such reactions.

Seeing how 99.7% of cases of young people aren't deadly, they don't need to go to the ER even if they do get it.

That's the point of of correctly conveying the risk. We need to keep society running, even in the cynical case, someone has to dig the graves.

Seems the Gods are slacking - I would fully expect the NCAA to cancel the tourney only in a year we actually had a chance to win it.

If they cancel, the conferences will cancel the conference tourneys.

Study: Coronovirus stays in air up to three hours, viable on surface for 3 days

https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/487110-tests-indicate-coronavirus-can-survive-in-the-air

A study awaiting peer review from scientists at Princeton University, the University of California-Los Angeles and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) posted online Wednesday indicated that the COVID-19 virus could remain viable in the air "up to 3 hours post aerosolization," while remaining alive on plastic and other surfaces for up to three days.

"Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of HCoV-19 is plausible, as the virus can remain viable in aerosols for 42 multiple hours and on surfaces up to days," reads the study's abstract.

So, I think a bit of sensationalism I. This pop sci report. The paper compared viability on surfaces and as an aerosol to SARS-CoV-1, which I believe is the virus that causes the SARS outbreak in 2002. According to the actual paper:

- both viruses are viable as aerosols for at least 3 hrs (max time point in test). SARS-CoV-1 had ~10 fold higher view titer at 3 hrs.

- both viruses have similar viability on surface of plastic and steel, both dropping to limit of detection (LOD) by 3 days (little change between 48 and 72 hrs)

- HCoV-19 is more stable on cardboard than SARS-CoV-1, with the former being detected at 24 hrs but not at 48 hrs.

-SARS-CoV-1 is more stable on copper, being detected at 8 hrs while HCoV-19 was not.

-SARS-CoV-1 decays faster on steel, and a lot faster on Cardboard for some reason.

Aerosol concern, from this article at least, seems outright wrong. Cardboard (Amazon boxes) and Steel (silverware and handrails?) are a little more concerning.

Not sure. Would look to see if your Lysol is on the EPA list.

You'll probably be fine anyway, but ounce of prevention, right?

2nd presumptive case in Montgomery County:
The woman, who is in her 40s, lives in south Montgomery County. Health officials say she recently traveled to New Orleans, but has not traveled abroad. She is being treated at a hospital in Montgomery County.

There was a conference in New Orleans a week or so ago and someone in attendance had coronavirus.

Wonder if she attended that.

So what are you guys telling someone that says it's just the flu?

I have friends and family that swear this is all overreaction and hype.

I was talking with a friend last night about this. I told him to imagine it is exactly like the flu, then, and consider that this does not mean the regular flu is going away. This is in addition to the flu, car wrecks, gun shot wounds, tuberculosis, etc. that would ordinarily hospitalize you. It's not about it the virus killing you, it's about the tax on resources and what happens when there isn't sufficient treatment because we haven't lessened the strain on the system by extending the period of response. Then I forwarded him that article in the Atlantic about what Italy if going through. That seemed to get him to take it a little more seriously.

Add to the list of coronavirus *******s.

Quote:

A JetBlue passenger aboard a flight from New York City to Palm Beach, Florida, learned of his positive coronavirus diagnosis "right before takeoff," prompting the plane to be held on the tarmac as officials in Tyvek suits scoured the plane and notified passengers, according to a local report.

The man and his wife were traveling on Flight 253 to Palm Beach International Airport on Wednesday evening when he "got a text that he tested positive for the coronavirus," Dr. Alina Alonso told the other passengers at the airport, the health director in Palm Beach County told WPTV. "He has not been coughing or sneezing or anything on the plane."

If you're being tested for the virus, then it means you were exposed, and at the very least, stay home until you find out.

Yeah, but they have a life to live. Why not travel even though you're waiting for results of a corona virus test?
My religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me. That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave.

I'd make a comment as to why they thought a quarantine didn't apply to them, but it would probably get me a permaban.

As much as that sucks, and the fact hat Gobert is a grade A D-Bag, I'd bet money that none of them are going to die or come close. They are all young and in tip-top physical condition, and if there's one consistent thread among this virus is that young people who don't have serious pre-existing health conditions are at an extremely low fatality rate.
