CBS News shutters office after two employees get coronavirus

NEW YORK - CBS News shut down its New York City headquarters for cleaning and disinfecting on Wednesday after two of its employees tested positive for coronavirus.

Employees will be asked to work remotely for the next two days and broadcasts moved to accommodate the cleaning, the network said. For instance, "CBS This Morning" will originate out of Washington on Thursday and Friday while the New York offices are cleaned.

People who came in contact with the sick employees will be asked to self-quarantine for the next two weeks, CBS News President Susan Zirinsky said in a memo to staff.

"At this point, we anticipate the offices will be open Monday," Zirinsky wrote.
CBS has two separate offices located across 57th Street on the West Side of Manhattan, one primarily housing the staff of "60 Minutes." Complicating the issue for the network is that the two infected workers were stationed in different buildings. The network released no details on how the staff members were infected.

Meanwhile, The Associated Press and NBC News on Wednesday announced work-at-home plans as concerns about the global pandemic grew.

The AP will allow employees who are able to work at home to do so with the approval of their managers, implementing the new policy on a staggered basis throughout the world through the end of next week. The Associated Press operates out of 250 locations in 100 countries.
First in line, effective immediately, are AP staffers in offices where employees have had direct or indirect exposure to someone who has tested positive, or where the government requires people to work at home. These locations include New York, Washington, Chicago, New Orleans, Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, New Delhi, Singapore, Jakarta, Manila and Iran and Italy, said Gary Pruitt, the news service's president and CEO.

No AP employee has tested positive for the virus, Pruitt said.

AP is also stopping all non-essential travel, and told employees to avoid work dinners or conferences without approval.

"We must remain vigilant and careful over the coming weeks," Pruitt said.
Other news organizations, like The Washington Post, The New York Times and CNN, have encouraged or permitted employees to work remotely in recent days out of concern about the virus.

NBC News said it will allow employees in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to work at home or stagger hours if possible starting Monday. However, the network said this would not affect people who work directly putting together television shows on NBC and MSNBC.

The network is also limiting non-essential travel and asking its employees to limit large meetings and not bring visitors into the New York office, according to a memo sent Wednesday by NBC News President Noah Oppenheim and MSNBC President Phil Griffin.

People outside of the New York office are expected to come to work normally, the memo said.

I tell ya. That sure would give CBS zero warning and give you carte blanche to their entire operations at will. If there ever would be a good time to go fishing through their documents, now would be the time.

yup that fits. sorry to hear. dont stop fighting. **** cancer

to be honest the initial triage process in our emergency departments is poor at best. our current protocol encompasses trying to identify high risk patient's which includes a history of recent travel to a high risk area or being in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed. i am 100% sure I have discharged patient's from the ER with basic URI symptoms who are prob + for the virus. the medical system is not ready for this. however, the global/economic/social hysteria that is coming from this is a way bigger problem than the actual virus

we do not have the proper protocols to effectively protect all health care workers at this time. patient's come in with vague bull**** complaints like headache...........and it isn't till they get in a room, after sitting in the waiting room for 2 hours do they mention the cough/cold/congestion/fever they have been having. if **** hits the fan, which it might, our medical system is ****ed. we do not have enough ventilators, ET tubes, and paralytics to treat a gigantic population of patient's with COVID-19 whom are going into ARDS. That is Itally's problem. Not enough resources to intubate and maintain vents for that large of population. If the US is lucky the strain of virus we all get will have minimal symptoms, aka the common flu, with the elderly dying, but if it is this highly morbid Italian strain, we are ****ed.

Add to that, regular flu is going around, and we are a world of hypochondriacs lately scouring WebMD for every symptom, convinced everything is Lupus, cancer, ebola, etc.
true. nov-dec we had a pretty good group of flu B going around. when Jan hit, it was flu A, however the rapid flu tests have such a ****ty sensitivity (around 30%) that a lot of patient's are being discharged with a vague diagnosis, increasing hysteria and panic.....its alot easier to tell a patient they have the flu than that they maybe don't have corona

side note. i haven't been on this site in forever. I got word that Pence said the coronavirus test is available to everyone if they want it. (not sure if he actually said that), but if he actually said that, that is ****ing bull**** and a lie. our hospitals have a strict algorithm for sending covid19 tests, and if you dont meet high risk criteria, we will just send routine labs and send you home to quarantine yourself. you wont get the definitive test. do not think you can go to any emergency department and be tested. this is false and a lie. we do not have those capabilities yet.

Well, since anecdotal stories are king around here, just chatted with a friend in Ukraine.

They have been told to stay inside no matter what. . No electricity for 24 hours now. People are NOT reporting being sick for fear of mandatory gubment quarantine. They have food for now, but not the amounts like we are used to here in the states. Pretty much all social facilities will go on a minimum three week lockdown nationwide starting in a few hours. Schools, gyms, and the like. He is in a smaller town but he indicated that fear is very real and prevalent right now. It is the unknown that is getting to people. Palpable panic is in the air.

The Ukrainians tend to be hardy people from my limited experience but it is simply the herd effect. And something I am fairly certain we will see here as well. People are dumb as **** in groups and act erratically. It is the same effect that causes a normally calm and collected lawful person to huck a brick through a store window during a riot. I don't suspect a breakdown in society of course, but this virus will dominate our waking thoughts for the foreseeable future I am sure. Kinda already is...

At this point, I don't really know what good a test will do. Just assume that everyone has the virus or will get the virus and treat the symptoms. There are not enough test kits and not a quick way to evaluate them.

Most of us are just going to have to rely on our own immune systems in their current state to fight off this virus. The health system is going to be flooded and getting drugs and/or treatment is going to be a challenge.

Act like you are infected and try not to infect others.

Stock futures trading halted for a second time this week to keep markets from falling through floor

Stock futures hit 'limit down' for the second time this week overnight Thursday as global markets plunged amid investor fears about the coronavirus global pandemic.

Just as they did on Monday, futures on the S&P 500 triggered a halt following a 5% decline in pre-market trading. Futures on the Dow and the Nasdaq-100 also hit this limitation

I heard on CNBC this morning that no one knows what to do because we're not getting enough leadership from the federal government. What's up with that? Third world countries need 'leadership' from their government, not free people. Individuals and businesses can take care off this just fine, thank you.

given how the virus incubates I think 2x that time in strict social distancing would be enough to really hit a reset, which I think is what they are trying to do

they must see data showing us getting closer to an Italy situation. I think yesterday was that tipping point, although Trump still hasn't made that point abundantly clear.

It seems pretty clear to me that what we are seeing play out in Italy is what happened in China. It just wasn't as visible. It is happening in Iran. It happened in a small sample in the nursing home in Kirkland. It's going to happen in other places. Governments are wrecking their economies trying to prevent it from overwhelming their health care systems.

If those people want to ignore that and say "it's just the flu", well as the great philosopher Ron White says, you can't fix stupid.

The reset doesn't make it go away does it? Given how contagious this virus is and that there's no natural immunity, why wouldn't the infection rate simply pick back up again at the end of the two moths? So instead of being exposed to 10-20 people daily we'd be exposed to 0-5 people. Kids and their parents will still be asymptomatic carriers. And if its true that you can get this virus, recover and then be infected again, well....

edit to add: if they believe a time shift will work to keep us for being infected, they should say so. Or if they need us to avoid events, so they can more easily track cases and events, they should say so. Be open and honest and be clear as to your reasons. Promoting the cancelling of even small group events for no obvious purpose only incites more fear.

Because you give time for all the current cases to clear.

You also reset the board with fewer transmission pathways than before, because now some pathways are people who already got it and won't get it again.

And agreed. American people are happy to work together to solve problems. They just need to be told general objectives and good reasons and let loose. We're not getting clear straight talk. Or not enough.

That simply slows the spread, it deosn't stop the spread. Some reports have patients getting it more than once edit: being diagnosed again after being labeled as 'recovered.'

Gottlieb on CNBC right now is more worried about overstressing the healthcare system and more people dying due to lack of current resources. He estimates it will be over within a couple of months regardless but lowering the peak deaths is the primary goal. Not reducing the number of long term infected. He admitted we'll see an uptick later this year or next. Will we need similar cancellations and shut downs in the fall when it returns?
