I'm not sure what to believe but I work with a lot of people from China who say life has pretty much returned to normal. I'm not out there fact checking what their families are relaying to them though.

Also maybe a question for separate thread and there are a lot of assumptions built into this question but

How many of us would be a willing infected right now and get it over with? Kinda like a chicken pox party...

Yes. I'm a 32 y/o nonsmoker with zero underlying health conditions. I've had hangovers last longer than this would lay me up.
OK, i'm with you now. I think I might prefer to just get it and get it over with.
You two just refuse to comprehend - it's not about the young people. It's about the older folks + other at-risk people to whom you might pass it (directly or indirectly) that will end up being hospitalized. If you want to get it and can assure everyone that you won't come in contact with ANYBODY once you've contracted the virus, then have at it. Otherwise, just stop with the willful ignorance

We were presented with a question and gave an answer. The question didn't stipulate "if you're XX years old" or "underlying health issues"
Fair enough. Then my semi-ragey response should have been directed at Tysker, who framed the question in a way that perpetuates the whole "I'll be fine anyway, so don't screw up my economy" mindset. Apologies if I took it out on you.

Toward me? Seriously you're reading into the hypothetical something that isnt there. I'm just asking who would be willing to be infected now considering there's a high likelihood that as many as 70% of us are going to get it anyways. I would imagine that some people would be willing to become infected now when they can control the timeframe, be easily isolated, and know the risks (and hospital beds are available). The same may not be true for others. I even stipulated the question requires many assumptions- for instance, some of us are healthier, some can or cannot be isolated easily, some have kids or parents living with them and some have high risk thresholds.

I think at this point we're all very aware of the potential downside risk.

Ok. Glad you're getting your poultry shipments.

The business I work in has people showing up for work but unable to work because they aren't permitted to travel to perform field service and they aren't able to ship the equipment and parts they need for subvendor action.

Have a drink. Relax a bit.

Are there metrics/charts for Wuhan being back up? I believe there was an article referenced...
I saw something the other day showing traffic outside Hubei. It had resumed in late February, but was still about 25% of the historical YOY record.

I'll see if I can find it.

But don't post what you can observe from traffic trends because saying China isn't back to normal is a LIE

I got swine flu as a healthy high school student and it had me close to immobile for a week.
Ok. Most of the thousands I treated weren't as bad as you.
The 1968-69 flu sucked. It went thru central Texas like a whirlwind. I got it on a Sunday, missed a whole week of school with a terrible fever of alternating sweats and and chills. Went back to school (8th grade) the following Monday and 2/3rds of every class I was in was empty. Needless to say, teachers mostly had us check out & read school library books till most everyone was back, which was about 3 weeks total (counting the week I was out).

Very few of our teachers got it. Perhaps that was due to an immunity developed from exposure to previous flu's of similar genetics earlier in their lifetimes.
It's interesting how some years seem so much more virulent and what subgroups are most affected. During swine, those >35-40 seemed to have more immunity probably from being exposed in the mid late 70's.

I agree with Irish that it's not China that we necessarily need to worry about. they seem to have command and the capability to unwind this crisis.

****** or not, is that really the response you want the leader of the free world to give during a pandemic?
Yes. Because it's a stupid question.

Except it's not. So much of what Trump has said publicly has been directly contradicted by Fauci, other CDC officials, and the inarguable reality of the numbers. To name just a few examples...

Trump: the current number of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. is "going very substantially down, not up."
- Not even remotely true.

Trump: the U.S. is "rapidly developing a vaccine" for COVID-19 and "will essentially have a flu shot for this in a fairly quick manner."
- Not even remotely true.

Trump: "Anyone who wants a test gets a test."
- Not even remotely true.

None of the above is "fake news." All of those contradictions - plus many more - are on video, directly disputed by the experts, with hard facts. Why should Trump not have to answer for these lies? I don't care what side of the isle you're on, we should expect more from our leaders, especially during times like these.
I agree that Trump's approach to this has been very disappointing.

But, to nitpick, there is likely to be a vaccine in a quick manner. That means within 12-18 months which is REALLY fast for a new vaccine. It is not the 1-2 months that Trump seems to think. There is a difference between having a vaccine and proving a vaccine is safe and effective.

So, let me get this straight. The president is trying to calm the nerves of the public and our markets, and all liberals want to do is parse Trump's words and take them out of context?

Heaven forbid we have a leader who is concerned about panicking our nation into a frenzy.

Heaven forbid we have a LEADER who wants to LEAD us through this mess and not scare people.

This is why I'm voting for him, AGAIN. Because he the first president in a long time that cares about our well-being and wants to actually guide our Nation through the chaos instead of hiding from it.

Factory is in Shenzhen. We are being led to believe that they are fine and dandy, but that the fabric factories/markets are just now about to start reopening.

which means that both K2 and Irish are half right. Some things normal, some shut down. I don't see any reason to snipe at each other.

Wasn't worried about China. Someone asked about the numbers and I thought they were wondering how serious it was if China had managed to contain it with a relatively low percentage of their population not being infected. I replied that they did that by closing their country down and we're not back open yet. Then I got yelled at.

I am not worried about what China does. I am watching with interest to see if they start having new cases when they begin to open things up more - like allowing large meetings, provincial travel, when stuff like Disney land reopens.

What, about any of that, is "out of context"? Also, there's a HUGE difference between mitigating panic/calming nerves and LYING. I would absolutely love for Trump to lead in a way that didn't require him to lie. But he seems incapable of doing so. Lying is not "leading."

The Chinese *caused* the crisis.
They ignored the problems initially.
When it got out of control, told no one else.
Once SHTF they locked their citizens indoors, and welded their doors shut.
They killed their own citizens (if not from Covid, then from hunger) and after all that they *still* couldn't contain it.

If the Chinese had the command and capability Covid-19 would be a non-issue.
Yet here we are.

Is he lying or just talking out of his ass? Both are bad but lying suggests he knows something and is trying to deceive. I think he just likes to hear himself talk about things without knowing or caring too much about the details. Sometimes it works for him but right now isnt one of those times.
BonsaiGreen

First of all, the president is having discussions everyday with health officials and the information we're receiving is in alignment with what he's hearing.

Now, are there some details that he may have flubbed? Sure. This is all very fluid and dynamic. A vaccine for COVID-19 may be ready within a year and clinical trials may be conducted within 1 month or 2 (which may have been what the president was referring to). The point is this: Progress is being made and we should NOT panic.

Liberals want panic because it helps to mobilize uneducated voters to the polls to vote against Trump. They also want the markets to crash so they can hurt the country. So they go to twitter, facebook, TexAgs or whatever social media to gin up the mindless.

Meanwhile, leaders like Trump act. Leaders like Trump can see the bigger picture and rise above politics to calm the public, reassuring us that progress is being made.

Personally, in the beginning, I think he was trying to mitigate panic in attempt to avoid a significant dip in the stock market. The health of the economy has been his primary go-to, and when that was threatened he thought he could make this sound less severe in attempt to save his own ass in an election year. I know others will obviously disagree, but that's what his response has felt like since day one. And now that things have become way more serious, and not something he can just hand wave and BS like he usually does, he gets called out for it and resorts to his usual "fake news" cry. But it wasn't an unfair question. The same old "talking out of his ass" thing won't fly now, and he needs to realize that his words now have more weight than they ever have.

Whatever.

More and more people are falling into an MSN death spiral that the libs are loving. And it doesn't surprise me that I'm getting snide remarks and troll responses for the resident libs on this forum.

All I'm saying is that Trump is doing the best he can to calm our nation's nerves. This requires a message that is both confident and reassuring. This is exactly what adults do. This is what leaders do.

Libs seem to just want to run around with their hair on fire and scream that Trump needs to be removed.

We've seen this game before. It didn't work last time.

If Trump can manage to motivate people to come up with something, anything, to aid in the pandemic, then I don't care if Trump can answer what 2+2 is... he did his job.
