This is the real damage the overdone panic can cost. People will lose jobs, expected income, from cancelling this. There is basically zero evidence of any community spread in Houston right?

I saw a mention that the new Montgomery County case reported last night might be community spread per ABC 13 as there is no travel history outside of Texas.

You don't think cancelling the rodeo is a big deal?
I think it's ridiculous.

Whole US self-quarantines for 3 weeks.

The rest of the world only hit and miss.

What are the next steps? What stops it from re-entering? Then do we do another 3 week quarantine?

I actually don't doubt that, but that's because a large majority of people are not really affected by it or just figured it was a regular flu. It's a ludicrous, reactionary decision.

Hope treatments or vaccine is effective before 2nd wave.

Stock up on N95 masks and ensure the hospital system isn't overrun.

Be better prepared for the next wave.

Hope warm weather slows the virus, similar to flu.

Questions:

What is the projected or better yet known R0 values anywhere in the US. ?
What is the mortality rate ?
what are people doing to change these values ?
How many people are making the changes ?

We have talked testing all agree its incomplete.

I am 99% confident no one can predict this thing.

Should people take steps? absolutely starting at home.
Should we panic F* no.
Should we board up the country F* no.
Should we be/stay informed with the truth as it is known YES. That should be the primary job of gov and the media at this point. So just stop with the idiotic speculation.

Seems like major disruption for just hope of a potential slow down, right?

I am not ant-quarantine.

I think Companies should allow people to work from home and I would hope schools could accomdate those who choose to keep their kids home.

Beyond that, people continue to focus on hygiene, awareness of "space", etc.

Seems like that would get relatively similar results with less severe economic implications?

Neither is guaranteed to work...

edit: i havent followed enough of this thread to know where you or many stand. i am just asking questions. not sure your stance.

This panic is going to be the mother of all self-inflicted wounds. If you're middle aged or younger (and relatively healthy), it will almost be a non-event. Maybe a I'll go buy some more TP.

It's a panic-demic more so than a pandemic.

It's certainly not a non-event if I have to bury my parent's because of this even if I make it out okay.

True enough... but the same holds true if they died of the regular flu.

This is on top of the flu.

So whatever you think the flu might do to your parents, this ADDS to it.

Good grief. Whether you think this is a big issue or not is up to you, but it's ridiculous to keep saying "but the flu"... They could also die walking to the mailbox. That doesn't mean there's no added risk out there now.

Sounds like probably most of our parents. Stubborn and not going to let this thing mess with their lives if they dont want it to.

I haven't called my parents and spoken about this but I assume they are being semi cautious...however...I bet if I asked them to get our kids every day from school they would even if they "shouldnt".

Yup. I'm not even bothering talking to my parents about it, I'm choosing to talk to my sister about keeping them from even having the option.

I think I have learned how to be logical by following this thread... I will demostrate.

1. I do not have Covid19
2. I have had a drink or 2 every night this week
3. I am on vacation

Through top tier logic, I have found that drinking while on vacation is how to avoid being infected. Spread the word... spread is probably a poor choice of words.

Stubborn being the key word. My mom is in her mid-80's, and she's annoyed that her local parish has changed some things at Sunday mass to address this.

Seems reasonable if you are concerned. I have some concerns. Not extreme but some. Both my parents are in relativley good health but are in their late 60s.

They have a trip planned in a month or so and that, depending on where this stuff all is in a few months, might be the first time where i politely ask them to reconsider.

American politics have become so toxic it's going to get people hurt.

Generalizing here but the left see an opportunity to hang this on trump. The right reacts with "it's just the media" and ignore the situation. Meanwhile a good percentage of the country panic buys TP??? The CDC is completely botching the testing. Most major events being cancelled, stock market tanking... what's next?

Closing the Houston rodeo feels like a random indicator that we will have recession from this panic, simply because that seemed like one big event that was catering to patrons using common sense rather than giving into the panic. And now they have capitulated.

Like any virus, though, it isn't a non-event when one is sensitive or at least aware of the risk to the greater community as a host/carrier. Think about the complaints on this forum by folks who have witnessed someone whose child is sick and sent home from school then taking that child to get a haircut or around on errands since they "wasted a work day". And then the next customer and the hair stylist unknowingly give the virus to someone in the at-risk category before they realize they are sick or contagious.

It seems that there are still unknown issues with this particular virus, so while panic is pretty useless, practicing the advice of Dr. Fauci seems reasonable and self-segregating from vulnerable populations to allow the medical community to do what they need to to address the virus also seems reasonable.
