Two Baggage Handlers at London Heathrow Test Positive for Covid19

Quote:

Two British Airways baggage handlers reportedly working at London's Heathrow Airport have tested positive for coronavirus, the airline confirmed Friday.

In a statement to Bloomberg News, the airline's parent company confirmed that the two workers are being quarantined at their home. Colleagues of the two baggage handlers are reportedly also being tested for the illness.

A couple of folks asked me to provide an update after we had an opportunity to speak with the specialist our daughters see (regarding severe asthma). I know of at least one other poster that I believe is in a similar situation with their kid so with that said, here is what their specialist had to say:

1. They are in the 20% that are at a higher risk. (ie, most likely to end up in ICU)
2. Their age does work in their favor kids are less likely to die.
3. Absolutely do not stop control meds.
4. There are no preventative measures that can be taken other than practicing good hygiene and keeping their distance from people in general. Basically, the same thing you've been hearing & reading everywhere.
5. Permanent lung damage is a real concern
6. The entire hospital has been informed of the procedure for this (obviously its TCH)

This information matches what I've been thinking all along -- we need to be vigilant and take some measures to protect the kids. I don't think my viewpoint is panic or hysteria; it's pragmatic. I think this can be managed if taken seriously and realistically. I have just about zero worry of this being fatal to my girls, but I also don't want serious illness for them. Just because they may not be sent to their dirt nap doesn't mean it wouldn't have serious consequences. For that reason, I'll decide about self-quarantine late next week (end of Spring Break), regardless of whether school districts shut down. If you think this is hysteria, that's clearly your prerogative. I have 2 girls to protect. I'll do what I think is necessary to increase their chances of not getting seriously ill. If the school districts decide to shut down, perhaps this helps in understanding why. It would be nice for people to understand my perspective, but that's not necessary. What I do think is necessary is better communication is needed to clearly define what the dangers are and the part everyone plays in managing the safety of the 20%ers. This has nothing to do with confidence that all of this caution is necessary it's because we're very much not sure it's not (double negative?). The newness and lack of medical confidence has families like mine on red alert. That's why I am posting some personal stuff which I rarely do. If that helps people understand another perspective, great. If not, I did my best. This is the life and stress of a parent of kids with severe asthma and it barely tips the scale compared to what others go through -- comparatively, we have it good.

On a lighter note: The forum fuzz gave me my 1st 24-hr ban. I guess I'm legit now. I should probably not drink liquid Russian rage (Vodka) while posting. Lesson learned. To the dude I teed off on sorry dude; not my finest moment.

Anyways, flame away

Almost wonder if the smart thing would be to out and intentionally contract it now... before hospitals and resources are overwhelmed. Get it done and behind you in ~two weeks.

Its not like chicken pox....you can get re-infected and reports are when you get it a 2nd time, you are more likely to experience a cardiac event.

Thanks for the input on asthma. My whole family has it. My twins almost died of RSV when they were babies. They are 23 now, but still get asthma with colds and respiratory infections.

Hubby has recently started having bad problems with it, and just finished bring on steroids and antibiotics for a respiratory illness.

I have it too, but I seem to have it under control better. I have been known to get very sick after flu.

We've been taking vitamin C and D. I've been exercising.

We also live in San Jose where we have 24 cases.

I've stopped going to church, Bible Study, and the gym. I stock on food so I don't have to go shopping as much.

We are retired, so that's good.

We are trying to put our home on the market next month and move out of California. Bad timing for this.

Well Damn. I have been concerned with my son. He has pretty bad asthma. Treated with 3 different inhalers. He is 11 and plays select league basketball so he is in great physical shape. He had an episode in pre-athletics on Wednesday that required a breathing treatment which he hasn't had since he was about 5.

I am not worried about myself or my wife in this situation as we are expendable. I am worried about him. This sucks.

Did Frito Lay and Pepsi give a reason for telling everyone to work from home? Has there been any employees there who have tested positive? I just keep thinking there is more to this than the public is hearing. I've never heard of large companies shutting down and telling everyone to work from home.

If the worker's job can be done from home with limited loss of productivity, why not?

I mean, based on the #'s we're seeing if you've got 1000 people coming to work on a company campus every day, it's just a matter of time before one is symptomatic.

This guy is a good follow. At the beginning of the week he suggested as many as 1,500 infections at that time. Washington alone is currently reporting only 85 cases as of today.

Coronavirus is ultimately going to show large corporations how pointless it is to make employees come into huge offices every ****ing day when they realize there is no loss of productivity and actually an increase in productivity while working from home. Commercial office building space could take a hit over the next few years.

Everyone with a relative over the age of 60 are facing the same dilemma as you and your daughters. There are not going to be a lot of simple answers for those of us having elderly parents, or a spouse with a similar medical condition.

I have been preparing for this possibility for over 40 days, hoping it would not come. I am still optimistic that drug treatments will be finely tuned in the next 40 days. Warmer weather does not seem to have a large effect, but more sunlight is beneficial. I have been trying to get in the habit of treating every public surface as a potential means of catching the flu or any other virus, and educating everyone in my family of proper hygiene. It will be difficult to keep it away, but I am lucky enough to live and work in an area that provides an opportunity to avoid personal contact for months.

I am somewhat reassured that our state and local health departments are prepared. I am also very encouraged by the response of corporations in trying to slow the spread. Small communities can also implement NPIs to curtail the impact, including some that haven't been thought of yet.

Anyway, at least I am much more prepared for this than the swine flu, which almost killed one of my family members.

Pollen allergies spiked here this week.

I went to the grocery story a few days ago, and sneezed in the aisle. The whole store around me went silent for a few seconds, and people were staring at me.
About a week and a half ago, I finally got over the worst sinus infection I've ever had. An enormous amount of very hard coughing -- enough that my stomach muscles felt like they had been ripped apart.

The area under my eyes were black and there were liquid that looked kind of like blood. People probably thought I was either a rock star or had ebola.

I didn't look this good at all:

Anyone else wonder what it would have looked like if the internet existed in the time of the bubonic plague epidemic? It's an interesting thought experiment at the least...

Does more information do well to keep people informed and safe? Or does the panic contribute in a negative vector?

Obviously, they didnt know the cause of the plague at the time that it was spreading, but we dont really know much about this new virus either...except that people can spread it days or weeks before they even know they themselves have it...

Yeah, I feel you. This darn kid cost a lot with the whole in vitro thing and I want a return on my investment. That is a bad joke, but damn when it comes to kids you start to kind of freak out. We live in a small town outside of San Antonio, but I go to work there everyday. My biggest fear would be bringing something back to them.

Not many world travelers in Pleasanton Texas so I feel somewhat safe with them here.

or better yet, corporations realize that they have too many people working and that they can actually get by with less.
I don't think this would make our President happy.
