How about the folks walking through demanding to be tested because they are showing symptoms and getting blown off? This is the type of **** that will get Trump booted out - he keeps babbling about rate cuts when folks want safety first.

Have you found a site you can export the data to an excel file?

They don't simply get turned away. The people don't fit the testing criteria. Hypochondriacs would overburden the system and use up resources that aren't readily available yet.

After seeing the garbage about the state labs throughout capacity, I'm now in the camp of widespread testing. It's almost like they are committed to letting it get out of control (not that it probably already hasn't). They'll never even be able to keep up with suspected cases that way.

They should start co-opting university labs, which seem to be way more capable of doing this sort of thing, and conducting random screenings of much larger populations...possibly starting with airline travel.

You've read about travelers showing symptoms coming back from Italy begging to be tested at the airports only to be turned away right? I have read about two off the top of my head in the past 24 hours that actually have tested positive Coronavirus.

So you either ban flights, or get tests in the airports. The third option of doing nothing is unacceptable.

Well last night was awesome

Highly recommend Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets.

Very crowded. Giant jugs of hand sanitizer everywhere. People using bleach wipes where they could.

Some people in masks, but if I was sick. I wouldn't be going. Two more movies today!

This seems to be going on without a pause. But a lot more people using the sanitizer and washing their hands in the bathroom

Texas can only test 125 per day.

I don't know how they think they'll be able to track anything when the daily numbers rise to hundreds.

One thing I remember too during swine flu I went to Argentina - went to a very small town Iguazu Falls - they had temperature taking folks at the airport that scanned EVERYONE getting off the flight. Tiny town in South America - come back to Houston two weeks later - no one in the airport doing anything just come right on in.

I wonder if all of these internal travelers are getting sick because of exposure and lack of sleep from travel and skiing. It's like the travelers are all testing positive.

I'm waiting for someone in our government explain how SoKo can test so many people per day and the US cannot

it absolutely seems purposeful

who gives a **** if the false positives are too high

South Korea and Japan are getting into a bit of a spat over the entry restrictions Japan is putting on anyone coming from South Korea. Its a mandatory 14 day quarantine. South Korea has warned it will retaliate if Japan doesn't withdraw this restriction.

My belief is someone was bribed by a test kit manufacturer to use their specific product and not ones other countries are using. It seems that's how a lot of government business is done in the USA. I'm surprised Trump hasn't stepped up to make testing more available.

in 3 months, in 2nd world china, population 1.3 billion, there have been 80k cases...

.006% of the population.

when will this exponential race to infinity kick in that you guys keep referring to?

At China's rate, the US will have 18,000 cases total in a couple of months, which brings us into May, which means temps warm up which helps mitigate the issue.

Suppose we have 5 times as many cases as China - 1st world versus 2nd world, but OK - in the next couple of months, that's a total of 100,000 cases.

My wife works for a sizable manufacturer of lab consumables. She told me that they sent a regulatory filing to FDA for approval of a test kit and intend to make it freely available for the time being. Will remain to be seen. I don't put it past her company's leadership to be completely full of **** and lying through their teeth to seem like good guys.

Not gonna matter if a state lab has peak throughout of 10 tests a day....

Edit: I don't know why I posted this as a reply to your post.

It looks like the CDC doesn't have the manpower or equipment to even perform the needed number of tests. Not that they don't want to, I think they just don't want to admit that they physically can't.

I hope Trump (or Pence?) steps in. What the **** is the CDC doing?

Exactly, and now the real death rate is something like .1-1 percent (per my link above). So, basically lower than the flu, which essentially kills the elderly/immunocompromised only in 1st world healthcare systems.

Maybe the Chinese were just, gasp, overly-cautious because they didn't know what the heck was going on?

What type of equipment and personnel are needed to perform the tests (re: the post by Abbott about Texas being able to do 125 per day once things are ramped up)?

I'm wondering if this equipment and personnel are mostly located in research universities here in the states and the process of pooling all of those resources in a system like ours might be insanely difficult and time consuming compared to doing the same in a small country like South Korea where (assumption) the facilities and personnel all report to the federal government?

I.e. stop all research and other work you are doing on that equipment and run COVID-19 tests 24x7
  • USA Researcher: Da***?
  • SK Researcher: Whatever you say, boss!

I don't understand the throughput issues. These are supposed be quantitative RT-PCR assays and the equipment is pretty standard in a modern molecular biology lab. I've never used a machine that couldn't run at least 96 reactions at a time and a run probably doesn't take longer than 3 hrs from setup to results. Assuming their running 5 replicates for positive and negative controls and each test, there should be room for 10-15 tests for each 96 well run.

Every research university in the state probably has at least a dozen machines for this, but the lab space and maintenance might not be up to specs. All short term problems for an emergency.

I was wondering the same thing. In graduate school at A&M, we had a 386 well plate rt-PCR machine. Just by myself, I could run 160-240 tests per day, assuming the same number of replicates you mentioned.

That's one machine, in one lab, run by one person. And the most the entire state of Texas can do is 125 per day? Makes zero sense, even if you consider competing research demand for the machines and labor.
Can't run assays without reagents.

maybe those that are concerned about future pressures on the healthcare system to treat people that are actually sick. or maybe those that are dont desire panic due to inaccurate data?

SK was testing 10,000 people a day within a few days of realizing they had an issue. Unacceptable we can't even get close

My opinion, and yeah we all have a smelly one, but this escaped a lab. Not saying it was man made, but it escaped a lab none the less with some really bad stuff. Once they found out there was this breach they had to fear for the worst. Weld people indoors, etc. Once they figured that out they realized they dodged a bullet. That said the social hysteria was out there and not going back in the cage.

But I agree I think there are a million plus more cases than reported. I think this is nothing more than a bad case of the flu at the end of the day. Which with any flu mutation hits a little harder at first.

Order the publicly disclosed oligos from Eurofins. Use Taqman instead. Use existing positives as a positive control and some dog's ass as a negative. Iron out the bugs in an afternoon.

That would be better than waiting for CDC to get it's thumb out of its ass.

A - Watch the video above. We aren't testing as we should be so of course the numbers aren't showing here yet. The math suggests at least 1,500 cases in Seattle alone.

B - in the first week of February Italy had 3 cases. As of yesterday? See below...
