The interviewer is an idiot, but the guy they are interviewing is an executive of the port. Are you saying he is lying?
This is what you wrote earlier ...

"This is much bigger than 2008 or 9/11. It's going to be the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression. Depending on the severity around the world, it could exceed even that (such as every country going Iran, Italy, and China).

It's not apocalyptic, but it's going to absolutely crash the global economy at the absolute best case scenario. At the worst case scenario, we're looking down the barrel of another Great Depression."

I think it's very fair to ask how you know this is what will happen.

" It's grinding international shipping and travel to a halt. How can you ship anything when people can't work and when it lives on surfaces for days? How can people travel when just stepping foot in an area means a new vector for infection? "

This statement is in the definitive. You didn't say "I think" which would've created an opinion

I just got off the phone with a microbiologist in Jordan and he basically blew off the whole panic and said that they would have a vaccine in about a month and everything will calm down.

Our US colleagues are not so casual but they are in a way more guarded state at the moment.

I meant about all of your other doom and gloom posts.

You're posting your opinions as facts. I'm wondering what your qualifications are for doing that.

I'm not an economist. I just don't see any good news here. People can post anything on a forum so anecdotes don't mean much to me unless they have video or audio or some other evidence to back up the claim. I would rather actual data or first hand reports from people involved.

I don't understand why so many people are just blowing this off like it's nothing.

Irony ...

I'm not posting anecdotes though, just an opinion. I never stated anything was a fact. I'm a cynical person in a general and don't tend to believe much of what I hear from the government, even one I voted for because they often react like a sloth to anything with rapidly changing conditions.

You're right though, my post was an overreaction. I'll make sure to refrain from such moving forward.
So anecdotes from others aren't acceptable but your opinion is. Interesting.

No. Tamiflu is a monoculture of antibodies for influenza viruses. Basically just floods your body with synthetic antibodies. Won't work on anything other than influenza.

Tamiflu is not antibodies. It's an inhibitor that blocks an enzyme used in viral production.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oseltamivir

I don't know if coronaviruses use this mechanism

Why does tamaflu cause some people to have night terrors?

Because some people are defective.

there's been a lot of good news in the last two weeks. i was much more panicked a week ago.

it's might not be as infectious as previously thought. it might not be as airborne or maybe not at all. there's hope that discipline and social distancing would be effective. China seems to be getting back to work, which is the first thing required to stave off a collapse.

it's still bad and will kill you, but the pressure point feels different now. it's more malaise than panic to me right now. this will be a muddle.

i would even guess that the overall US death toll remains much lower than we expect, but at TREMENDOUS economic cost.

which of course will lead to people *****ing about how this was a nothing burger and wasn't worth it.
I kinda agree with you. I see the US being much more spread out than a typical Asian city to play a pretty good role. There's a few anti-viral treatments that will be promising. It may be that I already freaked out and did my prepping when the first case hit Seattle. Now, I'm just sitting here chilling with my respirators and supplies. Optimistic scenario is that things pretty much are what it is now. Everyone's a little tense, but still more or less normal. In the medium term, we'll all have to be cognizant of clean habits, most people will catch it, and you'll just stay home for a couple of weeks.

Pessimistic scenario I see is that it will never go away, and people are susceptible to re-infections. I'm willing to bet $20 that there will never be a vaccine. It'll stick around till it disrupts things enough to really hurt the economy and society.

Germany today:

252 new cases, 514 cases overall.

And that's one country that we can have 100% trust in their #s.

I hope these numbers are wrong. 252 in the last 24hs ?
Keep in mind this does not mean 252 people contracted the virus within the last 24 hours. Simply means new cases were discovered. The individuals could have contracted the virus days or weeks ago.
K. Thanks.

A few things really going for us in this whole deal:

1) Americans are fairly clean / germ-aware
2) We live spread out relative to other countries
3) We value personal space to the point where many Americans are isolated from their own communities even

Survival rate > 99% for working ages people.
Lights won't go out.
Faucets won't dry up.

Business will slow from people isolating themselves and not traveling, work from home, and a wave of sick leave, but society will be pretty normal otherwise, except maybe for healthcare and hospitality workers and some school closings.

Unless the virus hospitalized you or a loved one, there isn't anything to fear. Economic collapse and societal break down is not likely.

Seriously stop the fear mongering. The best thing we can do to mitigate catastrophe is reduce gatherings of people and traveling, but otherwise go about business.
