I Have Spoken said:

Why are people buying up bottled water? Are we shutting off the water? This isn't a hurricane.

Because after breathing, it's the fastest thing that you will die without having.

Again, is the water being shut off? Honestly, I just can't see how loading up on water is taking so much priority. My tap with a Brita solves this nonissue.

Stocking up on bottled water is an easy, inexpensive insurance policy that can save lives. It is irresponsible NOT to have a week or two supply on hand at all times.

Which is fine. I have a case, because I live in SF. But specific to this scenario, still not getting a good answer. And stating that everyone should have a bottled water supply regardless is hardly a reason for what we're facing right now. Just kind of comes off as snarky.

Just say, "there is no good reason that I am aware of, but you should anyway" and be done with it.

Viral pneumonia. You mean, like the flu? So now they are counting flu numbers in with coronavirus...

This is all hysterical nonsense.

No, they are counting those separately and influenza. Singapore has incredible tracking for this. The stigma against coronavirus is why they are lying about it.

I think we'll run out of most everything else long before that, yes. And if it gets to that point, twelve bottles of water will not go far.

New cases are up 20 to 50% today in virtually every country, including India. So much for the theory, or possibly really hope, that warm humid weather would dampen it down. The one outlier is Singapore. What the heck are they doing that no one else is doing? We need to figure that out and copy it as fast as possible.
Singapore has been reporting CV as "viral pneumonia". Their number of viral pneumonia cases have been increasing exponentially.

Lmao so they just changed the definition. Classic bull**** government reporting.
Impressive!

All I'm saying is it doesn't take much for society to collapse if this turned into a mass out break. People aren't going to go to work, which means truck drivers aren't driving water to the store. Gasoline supplies will dry up, again because truckers aren't trucking it around. Do you want to be held at the mercy of the government if something like this happened? I'd rather have several cases of water, some can food and plenty of ammo.

Not to sound like a Richard, but people think all too often that it can't happen here.

Knocking off non-essential interpersonal contact/mass gatherings should be enough to wrangle the spread rate to not "oh ****" levels. The shutting down society talk seems overkill... like it goes to 11 overkill.

The flu is an upper respiratory disease. It rarely causes pneumonia. Pneumonia is a lower respiratory disease with swelling of the bronchioles and dense mucous and fluid in the alveoli. This new virus causes some degree of this in most who are infected, and it can lead to complicating bacterial pneumonia. Pneumonia is a major killer of the elderly and those with pulmonary illnesses.

Yes, we just need to slow the transmission rate and frequency down to a level our medical care system can handle.

And my point is, if things fall to that level (which it won't, from this at least) then a case of water won't be helpful one bit. I guess if it makes you feel better knowing you'll have water to get you another week over those who don't, but in the grand scheme of things, if society has collapsed that far I think we'll be long past being concerned about a few bottles of water. But hey, if it makes you feel better, great. Perhaps that week of water will get you through until society magically rebounds, while I died at day 4 or 5. Boy will my face be red...

Ammo, on the other hand...

vast majority of people are going to feel like **** for a day or two, at worst. spike of fever and persistent cough. i would also assume the severity of symptoms and recovery time largely tracks the mortality rates with respect to age/gender/etc.

your average worker isn't going to be laid up for two weeks unless they are told to self-quarantine.

Yes, except the flu causes pneumonia rarely, while this corona virus causes some level of it in most people that catch it because of the location of the cells it infects.

WE in all likelihood will not,. YOU might. Generally speaking.

You might be surprised at how many repairs are required daily in a large metropolitan area. Smaller cities and towns have to worry less, but individual residences or parts of neighborhoods may find themselves without water for a time if enough workers are unable to work.

In a case study of 1099 cases pneumonia was diagnosed in 90% of the cases. The flu does not do that.

I agree. I'll be long gone from the city if it gets to that point. Which, again, it won't from something like this. I suppose it's possible that mortality rate shoots up to 50+%, in which case all bets are off. But then in that case, of course, I'd be knocking on your door.

Lol, most people can't afford a week off of work. Enough people will go to work that society will function.

I think the fact that most working age people seem to be able to fight it off in a couple of weeks will keep us up and running with maybe some supply issues here and there.
