They are not. Anyone with a modicum of sense should recognize that telling people not to use masks to protect themselves is simply trying to prevent or lessen the run on mask purchases by the general public, in an effort to preserve quantities for health care and other official uses.

Edit to add. Yes it's true that most masks won't completely filter out 100% percent of airborne pathogens. But the notion that they won't filter out any viruses, or reduce the risk of infection in any way, is simply asinine.

Surgical masks will help keep you from spraying it everywhere.

Nothing to keep it out.

You would also need a way to decontaminate / remove your mask without infecting yourself in the process. Problem is if you're close enough to get it on your mask (whether surgical or N95/100), you're close enough to get it through your eyes.

Really need gloves, N95 or higher, and eye protection.

    Have quite a bit of domestic travel coming up this month. I'm probably going to cancel all of it...not out of fear but out of hassle factor. I simply don't want to deal with all of the unintended consequences this will lead to and I imagine most of the folks involved in same trips are going to do the same.
