The tone has finally changed I see. Looks like this one is real. Containment has failed utterly, as most of us knew it would. We are a true global community of BILLIONS. You aren't gonna lock it down. Far too little, far too late. As expected really. And with an incubation period that long, it was inevitable. We were probably doomed before this thing even had a name.

So, this is happening. I don't think anyone here can argue that anymore. Even the naysayers. The fight now will be against the scale of it. The lethality of it is not Ebola bad, but absolute numbers could still be high after all said and done. We can mitigate to an extent but this thing is in what, 20+ countries now? Most of which have limited or zero containment themselves?

The problem with things like this is that there is an irrational view of pandemics. We hear the word and think Hollywood movie doomsday stuff. People turning into mush in the streets kinda thing. Not gonna happen with this one. Let's stay grounded in reality.

What WILL happen is another consequence of the global community. The economy. We Americans are horribly blind and take our economic machine for granted. Mainly the supply network. This may be the first thing to truly disrupt our daily standard of living in generations. This is what I am worried about. That and the absolute cost to our healthcare that would ensue if even only 1% of our populace gets it.

These are my truths as I see them. I do also think our government is more prepared/preparing and taking this more seriously than they are letting on. Still probably not enough to stop us from hurting though. I got to be part of a gubment think tank years ago and it truly opened my eyes to some very harsh realities.

Bye bye. I'll knock twice on your bunker door when Flu season is over and it's safe to come out.

Ha. See? This is exactly what I am talking about and why large public discourse on these kinds of things is essentially useless. I do believe this thing will continue to spread and will meet every criteria of being a pandemic (it kinda already does arguably). So now I am a tinfoiler that will hunker down with my metric tons of beans and aspirin...

Unless I missed some sarcasm there.

(And if you can point me to a neat bunker that would be awesome. I don't have one to call my own).

As I said before. All tourist visas should be cancelled. All visits for any reason of non-US citizens should be revoked. Anyone leaving the country to anywhere will be quarantined upon their return.

Anyone entering the country from anywhere will be quarantined.

12-18 months for a vaccine. Can't stop it but can slow it down.

We've already talked about that. We live in a large metro, but have lots of family in a medium sized city with good health care options and much lower population density. If this thing takes off to the point that I'm working from home, we're getting out of the big city for a while.

A phase I for a vaccine was just submitted to FDA. I think it will be weeks or a few months considering the resources they are throwing at this.

To keep it short. The decisions of a few will dictate the fates of many, the "greater good" applies at a macro level (and all the consequences of that thinking), and though this was never a bullet point of course but the number one concern of the government, is the government. As in, the government MUST survive at all costs. Ironically enough, my specific case dealt with containment.

All in all, pretty standard stuff really. Nothing exactly new here. I even agree with all of that. I think most of us do internally. Now just take those thoughts and expand them to a macro level. And include yourself and your loved ones into one of the numbers columns. Then things get sobering.

Not surprisingly, CDC says be prepared for school cancellations and be prepared to work from home.

This is going to be a huge economic disruption.
I've been worrying about this. More than the owners and other guys at work. As plumbers, we can't work from home and will likely be cut-off early on. I'm sure house-to-house service tech jobs will be curtailed very early in any quarantine situation.

I tried to stress for them to be prepared to miss work for an extended period. I was pretty much blown off.

I'm with you. I wonder what percent of people can really work from home. My guess is 30-40%. If people in the natural gas, coal, refineries, power, water treatment, Fire, police, EMS, healthcare quit going to work we will have problems.

How many here will be forced to stay home if schools close? If schools close, daycare should close too. There goes a good percentage of the workforce.
I work in corporate for a retail food chain. In theory I could work from home, except they are just now (as in with hiring me and another) coming out of the stone age and moving to having everything digital. At my old job, I could have done it from anywhere with an internet connection. And I'm fairly sure retail will be one of the first casualties of closures. No clue what a partial or full shutdown will look like. Could be that some parts of the country still operate while others do not. I'm guessing they have some sort of catastrophe planning as they have been through numerous hurricanes, but I am new, so who the hell knows.

My wife and I fit this description nearly 3 weeks ago when we went to the doctor. Flu like symptoms with low to no fever. Negative flu tests. No further testing ordered and sent home on Tamiflu and symptom-treating meds.

Most likely explanation is a false negative on the flu test and I definitely don't believe we had Covid 19. But, my point is that in South Korea or elsewhere we would've been tested for it. With no travel or extenuating circumstances there was no thought to test us here in the US.

Its not justified at this point. Could it be? Maybe. Swine flu infected between 11-21% of the world population. So if we modeled that to our population (call it 330mm) with a mortality rate of 2.5% and a severe case percentage of 15% then we're looking at 900,000-1.7mm deaths with 5.45mm-10.4mm severe cases. Even if you're talking over a year's span that could easily overwhelm health care systems and create a very severe problem.

So justified at this point? No probably not. Justified at some point. Maybe, let's see what Western countries do against it.

My comment didn't actually reflect how I really about this, and how I truly feel about this whole thing is really pissed.

This thread is a microcosm of humanity, and the hysteria that is starting to emanate from this thread is going to cause (talking about as a society as a whole):

A) Unnecessary shortages of food and supplies
B) countless injuries, property damage, and some deaths related to the hysteria trying to obtain supplies.
C) The temporary collapse of the economy that will drive the dumb masses to elect a freaking communist as president of the US. Thus ensuring that this is not just a temporary blip, but the downfall of our livelihoods.

All of this might happen because of a new version of the flu that most likely escaped a lab in China. An illness that does not cause death or a serious condition for 95% of those who happen to get it with today's modern medicine.

To piggy back a bit, everyone should read the post-exercise summary from the John Hopkins / CDC exercise in the fall around a coronavirus pandemic.

http://www.centerforhealthsecurity.org/event201/recommendations.html

As a summary, their priorities in the case of a pandemic:

1. Continuity of government
2. Building up supplies, drugs, inventory for deployment where needed.
3. Maintain travel and trade to support the economies of the world.
4. Businesses should focus on being prepared.
5. Prioritize reducing economic impacts.
6. Focus on controlling information and social media.

Notice something missing? Saving lives. Everyone is just a number to big gov (national and world). Economics and travel are a higher priority than keeping everyone alive.

Good luck.

What is this new virus then? Please tell me. All I have heard is that it has flu like symptoms, is transmitted just like the flu, and has about the same mortality rate as the flu.

Oh and is from the same virus family as, you guessed it, the flu

The mortality rate of the flu is 0.1%. This thing so far is sitting at about 2.7% worldwide, twenty seven times worse than the flu.

And if you look at the true numbers of those who have final outcomes for their cases (i.e., dead or recovered), the mortality rate is a little over 9%.

Let's not trivialize it.

All Trump has to say in a Pandemic is we're facing a tough test and now Bernie will take away your doctor and your medical care just like Democrats did last time. They lied to you then, they're lying to you now and in the middle of pandemic you'll be forced into crowded medical clinics to get treated.

Scare mongering? Sure. But time for playing nice is well past over.

The 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic killed about 50 million people worldwide. It killed about 2.5% of those it infected. This COVID-19 virus is a coronavirus, not a flu virus. It is about two to three orders of magnitude more infectious than the Spanish Flu, with a similar or higher death rate, plus an equally high complication rate.
