Complete disaster is not inevitable. It will be an incredible challenge for this country but all is not lost. People will have to sober up, put aside differences, and work together to face it head on. Lifestyles will change dramatically and there will be dark days but we will beat this.

Small steps first. Bigger steps as events warrant.

There are 13 cases in the US....we're not in a zombie apocalypse. In all seriousness...go for a walk and get some fresh air. Unless if course you're posting from China. Your post would make sense then

So a question for Mr.Infectuous, Vaulting Chemist, and all of those who tend towards a global disaster - it's been 4 weeks since this thread was started, been about two weeks since major governments have restricted travel from China. We haven't seen any major outbreaks outside of China, right? Outside of cruise ships which are an obvious situation for quick infection.

At what point do y'all start to concede this is a contained situation in the developed world? Put China's situation aside.

Your dates are about a week off, It's been 20 days (3 weeks) since the first post , flights weren't stopped till Jan 31 for USA. Things have been moving fast, so I can understand the mix up.

Im not of the belief that this will be something that decimates the world population. I think we are still a few weeks from knowing if this is going to be isolated to China. We still are missing a lot of data on spread of the virus, and how exactly it functions in the body. Also most of the data we are getting is coming from China, who I put no trust in. It appears that there will be a significant Economic impact in China, and some affect on the US. I wouldn't feel out of the woods for another month or so.

I'm happy to change my outlook when there is new data, and I don't call the stock market going up real data like some on here.

Would you consider a cruise ship the developed world?

I would argue they are perfect petri dishes of what will happen at A&M, Houston, Mexico City, San Antonios, D.C., etc...

Do you not agree?

Not weird at all. We were supposed to have US cities rioting because of panic this week. Hyping this incessantly seems like some people actually want an apocalypse to happen

I still find it weird as it doesn't look to be slowing down yet. I'm not hoping for doom or anything, but I am paying attention. I don't think it is time to declare victory yet.

The math is still not giving much optimism. You cannot just put China aside as they manufacture 20% of the world's goods and they are a major trading partner with most of the world's countries. The Chinese are taking amazingly draconian measures, and it has not slowed down the infection rate yet. Remember that this started with just a handful of cases in December, and it has mushroomed into all Chinese provinces.

Are the Chinese more susceptible to this virus? Maybe, but it doesn't appear to be of much significance.

Are we better equipped to handle this virus? Yes, and that is part of the $64,000 question.......can we drop the R0 to less than 1 in our country? If the virus can easily transmit through aerosols from symptomless carriers, I have very serious doubts.

The most important thing is to buy as much time before outbreaks start popping up in other populated countries such as Singapore, India, Mexico, etc.

Time that is needed to improve testing, time to test new treatment drugs, time to develop vaccines, time to modify hygienic habits, time for the virus to mutate to a less deadly strain, and time for the weather to warm up. Once you are able to drop the R0 below 1, the virus can be contained.

There is a good chance that's what happened in the last couple weeks is not exactly what anybody who has posted "It's a math problem" in this thread had in mind.

So not that deadly, seems like from a low occurrence spillover, short incubation, body recovers and does not carry disease forever, vaccine within a year. Got it.

This could get risky if you grind up rabid bats, two day old opossum meat, and add in Ebola flavored chicken scat.

The head of the World Health Organization has warned that confirmed cases of coronavirus being transmitted by people who have not travelled to China recently could be the "tip of the iceberg".

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus' remarks come as members of a WHO-led "international expert mission" flew to China on Monday to help coordinate a response to the outbreak that has so far infected more than 40,000 people and killed 908 in the country.

"There've been some concerning instances of onward #2019nCoV spread from people with no travel history to (China)," Ghebreyesus tweeted, using the virus's provisional scientific name.

"The detection of a small number of cases may indicate more widespread transmission in other countries; in short, we may only be seeing the tip of the iceberg."

While the virus' spread outside China appeared to be slow, Ghebreyesus warned it could accelerate.

"Containment remains our objective, but all countries must use the window of opportunity created by the containment strategy to prepare for the virus's possible arrival," he said.

Outside mainland China, there have been more than 350 infections reported in nearly 30 places. There have been two deaths, one in Hong Kong and the other in the Philippines.

Several countries have banned arrivals from China while major airlines have suspended flights, and Air China cancelled some of its flights to the United States.

The WHO-led mission to China is being headed up by Bruce Aylward, a veteran of previous health emergencies, Ghebreyesus said. Aylward oversaw the WHO's 2014-2016 response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

The WHO said in recent days there had been "some stabilising" in the numbers of new cases of the coronavirus in China. But the UN agency cautioned it was too early to say if the virus had peaked. (AFP)

WELL **** IT IS AIRBORNE! ****

Coronavirus is airborne, Chinese officials confirm

The deadly coronavirus is airborne, a Shanghai official has confirmed.

On Saturday it was announced the virus can now spread via aerosol transmission - meaning it can drift through the air for an extended period of time and cause infection if breathed in.
"Aerosol transmission refers to the mixing of the virus with droplets in the air to form aerosols which causes infection after inhalation," Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau deputy head Zeng Qun is quoted as saying by China Daily.
"As such we have called on the public to raise their awareness of the prevention and control of the disease."
The Chinese government is urging residents to cancel all social activities and avoid large gatherings of people, reports China Daily.

The discovery of the disease being airborne means coronavirus now has three modes of transmission.

Direct transmission occurs when a person breathes the air close to an infected person who has coughed or sneezed.

Contact transmission is when a person touches a contaminated surface then infects themselves by touching their mouth, eyes or nose.

Coronavirus broke out in the city of Wuhan in China's Hubei province in late December. Thought to have originated in a live market, the disease causes fever, coughing and breathing difficulty. In severe cases it can cause pneumonia and organ failure.

The virus has killed more than 800 people and infected 37,198 globally.
Only two people have died outside of mainland China - one in Hong Kong and the other in the Philippines.

Ha, I appreciate the offer, but can't right now. Got a little one that may or may not sleep through the night, so I'm limited to 1 or 2 for the forseeable future in case I have to downshift into dad-mode at some point in the night.
