A plane with American evacuees escaping the epicenter of the coronavirus landed at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland afternoon.

The plane, which left China Thursday evening, stopped to refuel at Travis Air Force Base in California before departing for San Antonio. Two Americans that were on board two planes in Canada and Travis Air Force Base in California are showing symptoms of the coronavirus, according to a Fox News report. That forced a two-hour delay this morning.

And they and everyone else on that plane are going to be quarantined in one of the most secure places on Earth for a few weeks. Not a big deal.

I'm at LAX airport right now. An Asian lady sat down behind me with a mask on and started hacking. People immediately GTF away from her, including myself.

This kind of thing has me worried, as I'm flying to New Zealand from LAX in early March. Starting to seriously wonder if I should wear a mask while flying.

I don't think it will be long at all - next week or so - where we hear about some person freaking out on a plane demanding to land the plane or deplane if a person of Asian descent starts coughing. And that sick with a cold person could be full blooded red white and blue American but it won't matter.

not a fan of the NYT, but will probably show this to my wife so she will stop panicking about the kids....

In one published case, a 10-year-old traveled to Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, with his family. Upon returning to Shenzhen, the other infected family members, ranging in age from 36 to 66, developed fever, sore throat, diarrhea and pneumonia. The child, too, had signs of viral pneumonia in the lungs, doctors found but no outward symptoms. Some scientists suspect that this is typical of coronavirus infection in children.

"It's certainly true that children can be either asymptomatically infected or have very mild infection," said Dr. Raina MacIntyre, an epidemiologist at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, who has been studying the spread of the new coronavirus.
In many ways, this pattern parallels that seen during outbreaks of SARS and MERS, also coronaviruses. The MERS epidemics in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and in South Korea in 2015 together claimed more than 800 lives. Most children who were infected never developed symptoms.

No children died during the SARS epidemic in 2003, and the majority of the 800 deaths in the outbreak were in people over age 45, with men more at risk. Among the more than 8,000 cases of SARS, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were able to identify 135 infected children in published reports.Children under age 12 were much less likely to be admitted to a hospital or to need oxygen or other treatment, the researchers found. Children over age 12 had symptoms much like those of adults.

Maybe purely coincidental, but I flew RT IAH-SLC earlier this week and those two flights were the emptiest planes I've been on in a long time.

On the way home there was only one person in the entire economy plus section (48 seats) and maybe half the regular economy seats were occupied.

With a higher likelihood of severe cases from older Chinese males, I'm really begging to suspect that the severity of the infection is dependent on Ace2 proteins from smoking.

Children, even if they do smoke, wouldnt have had the long term exposure that an adult would have.

I noticed the empty seats on flights this week, as well folks wearing masks of various types.

Lots of Asians at the airport this morning wearing masks.

Hate to say it but that is actually positive news. Sucks that people are getting sick but good that its hitting the unhealthy hardest.

How does that potential translate to people in US? Do vape people need to stop vaping (and being stop ******s)? Pot smokers? Allergy sufferers? Cigar smokers?

We definitely have better indoor and outdoor air quality compared to China. I am guessing that plays into this also.

I would assume that potentially just having more healthy lungs around than unhealthy ones would alone provide more protection even for smokers, especially if being symptomatic contributes a lot to passing it on. The R0 value would be lower among a population with fewer smokers, theoretically.

What would cigars have to do with anything? They aren't inhaled.

Cigars may not be intentionally/deeply inhaled by the typically cigar smoker, but make no mistake, it's being inhaled as evidenced by the higher rates of lung cancer.

Here is the article mentioned in the tweet: https://www.epochtimes.com/b5/20/2/5/n11845444.htm

From the article:

Quote:

"I received 127 corpses yesterday, and burned 116. Among them, 8 were confirmed on the death certificate (new coronary pneumonia) and 48 were suspected."
This is why the death count isn't rising like it should. 48 dead are in the suspected list.

Quote:

2) In addition to 29% medical staff, 12% of patients had gotten #coronavirus as hospital-acquired

Quote: "Hospital-associated transmission was suspected as the presumed mechanism of infection for affected health professionals (40 [29%]) and hospitalized patients17 (12.3%)."
Quote:

3) Astute readers added 29%+12% and asked if it means 41% of the 138 patients got
as a hospital-acquired infection... yes but maybe not one's personal risk walking into a hospital. 12% maybe weak/susceptible, and 29% medical staff have much closer contact than normal patients.

Another response:
Quote:

Study cites a 4.3% fatality rate. However, 61.6% remained hospitalized at the end of the study. So all we can really say about the actual fatality rate is that it's somewhere between 4.3% - 66%.

Also, *****.. Another Response....the 400 Million Number may be true...

Does anyone have a link to good medical literature about ACE2? This is the first I've ever heard of it in relation to viral infections and uptodate only has this blurb:

Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 A homolog to ACE has been identified and named angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) [47-49]. ACE2 is predominantly expressed in the endothelium of the coronary and intrarenal vessels and in the epithelium of the renal tubules [47]. ACE2 cleaves an amino acid from angiotensin II, forming angiotensin (1-7), abbreviated as Ang(1-7) [50]. A main action of the vasodepressor Ang(1-7) is activation of the Mas receptor, inducing kinases that lead to activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase [51,52]. Thus, it appears that the ACE2/Mas pathway regulates opposing physiology to ACE and angiotensin II; however, the physiologic significance or any therapeutic potential of activating the ACE2/Mas pathway remains to be elucidated

Hmmmm....Twitter seems to be down in a way. I can load the page and see tweets from 35+ mins ago, but nothing since. If I search for something, I can see things posted in the last minute but they aren't making it to my home page.

Makes me put my tinfoil hat on and wonder if it is to monitor what is being posted out of China and removing them before the masses see it...

They've been removing content from China for the last several days, but not until millions of people have seen it.

......ANNNNND its back. Carry on....nothing to see here....

I think you just need to stick it at -10 and move on.

Going back to what I read a few days ago, a research scientist posited that if a large American city got to 256 cases, it would be almost impossible to put the genie back in the bottle with what we know about the virus so far.

A number like 400,000,000 quarantined is so far above 256 infected that it is apocalyptic all by itself...
