It was monkeys owned and imported by a private lab company, not US bioweapons and the CDC? got involved when monkeys started dying and they kinda panicked when they discovered the monkeys had a new virus similar to Ebola or Marburg. Yes, they euthanized all the monkeys in the building, as you would expect. No human ever got sick, although I guess you can say workers were determined to have been infected because they had antibodies to the virus. I dont remember whether the Army was involved at all? As far as wiping out the last remanant of the virus on US soil, Reston strain ebolavirus has returned other times to the US in monkeys imported from the Philippines in the same way since then.

With the increase in global exchange since 1989, I can imagine we have more of this now....

But probably the most important question is....was the Military involved?

Very frustrated that our government is still allowing Americans to go to China and return without being screened. My BIL flies a 747 from interior of China and also Hong Kong to Germany and back each week and lives in Dallas. Their is a "cargo pilot exemption" that allows cargo pilots to do this without having to return thru the seven designated airports and be screened. The pilots complained to the union and the union negotiated a deal with UPS: they can refuse to fly the flights and be docked half their pay...or fly the flights and get double pay. That seems ridiculous to me.

We ordinarily get to see my BIL a few days between trips. He is due back from China next week. We of course are going to have no physical contact with him for quite a while. He has decided to continue to do the flights and get double pay.....and still be around his family and others when he comes home. He will be roaming the Dallas suburbs next week for at least a couple of weeks.

Our government needs to fix this exemption.....one way or another.

It looks like the the CDC sent the samples to USAMRIID to study, which is where the Reston ebolavirus was identified. So thats an army facility, but I dont think the Army had anything to do with quarantining and disinfection or had anything to do with the company that had imported the monkeys.

However, if you want to provide any evidence refuting the identification of the genetic sequence of the pShuttle insertion of SARS into a CornaVirus that his website posted.....that is why I posted it. So that people with more knowledge can look at that hypothesis....

It's an interesting hypothesis. I'd have to spend some time combing through the genetic sequences and trying to find matches in other organisms to say whether it has any validity, but the viral engineering method described is pretty similar to the generic one I outlined about a week ago.

Plasmids are a very common way to insert foreign genes into cells. The particularly clever aspect of using it for viruses, is that you can design any viral sequence you want, have it produced in a plasmid with controls on when the cells use it (i.e. "promoter" region), and then have bacteria produce the initial viral particles. It's actually a relatively easy and straightforward process in a lab, and can be done with minimal equipment (ignoring safety needs).

This kind of thing has me worried, as I'm flying to New Zealand from LAX in early March. Starting to seriously wonder if I should wear a mask while flying.

Only way a mask helps is if someone basically coughs into your face. The air on the plane is very clean.

Best defense is to not touch your face at all, wash your hands a ton, and use hand sanitizer a ton.
