Super TLDR. Corona virus similar to SARS got out in China, infected tens of thousands. It can cause acute upper respiratory distress, leading to potentially fatal pneumonia. It is highly contagious and may be transmissible by people without symptoms. China has quarantined millions of people. The rest of the world have some isolated cases from people who traveled there earlier this year, but generally have contained it. It is unknown how deadly it will be. Somewhere between Flu deaths and SARS is likely.

officially quarantined twice the population of Texas. Not sure if that number is low or not. And no one is going door to door to do wellness checks so people dying at home probably haven't been discovered yet.

Highly infectious flu virus that takes around a week from contraction to showing symptoms. People are contagious before they have symptoms. Regular flu has 0.01% mortality rate. This has a mortality rate between 2%-50% (big debate on the calculations)
Nobody trust the Communist Party official numbers because they're very likely under reported. The handful of videos that make past censorship look like something out of an apocalyptic film and verify the China numbers are low.
However, even the official (under-reported) numbers from China are scary. Number of infected doubles every two days. 2 weeks ago, it was ~100 case mainly in focused in Wuhan (the epicenter). Single digit cases in other Chinese cities.
Today there are 18,000 cases. Other cities in China around Wuhan have grown to ~100 case. Single digit cases in the other countries (including America).
Expert has said the rest of China are about 2 weeks behind Wuhan and other countries about 2 weeks behind the rest of China.
Some anti-viral drugs may be working to combat the virus, but not sure for certain yet.
