Dr Zhou had just arrived at Gatwick airport last week when a British couple physically recoiled as she entered a lift. "The woman looked at me, quickly turned to her husband and told him 'they should wear their masks'," she said. "They assumed I didn't understand English, that I was 'fresh off the boat' and that I probably had coronavirus." Humiliated, Zhou a scientist who was travelling from London to Slovenia stood in uncomfortable silence.
"I do give people the benefit of doubt because they're scared, but why can't they give me the benefit of doubt? Fear is no reason to be racist. Statistically, as a British citizen who hasn't been to China in two years, I have the same risk level as a white person."
So what? To ruin greater plans due to one's inability to tolerate trivial things is such a shame.VaultingChemist said:That is total BS.Quote:

That's not racism. What would you call the response to opening great distance from someone sneezing alot during an epidemic passed that way?10thYrSr said:Shanked Punt said:

It's like they don't even care what racist means. There HAS to be a more appropriate word for what is happening here, but it probably wouldn't resonate with readers.
Perhaps people are being prejudiced?

Ah, yes, some justified profiling is worse than a few hundred dead and a potential pandemic. Sounds about right.
Yes, how could you know that?. Very activist correspondent reaction, that post was there saying racism. Fails to see `ordinary' people really only have external clues to go by on something like that.third coast.. said:
Yes I automatically know where everyone I come across has been in the prior two year period.
So laughable
They're in an airport during the busiest travel time of the year for Chinese nationals and have no way of knowing whether or not she has or has not been to China in the last two months let alone the last two years. Some natural caution is justified. People may not like it, but there is a justification for it. Is it painful to be on the receiving end? I'm sure it is! However to reflexively blame everyone else for a basic leap of logic is insane. I get that the chances are incredibly low that this Doctor would be a carrier. They're also much higher than if she were black, latino or white. So really the reflexive attempt at virtue signalling is unnecessary. We all know you think you're better than the rest of us.Shanked Punt said:There is zero justification for profiling somebody who appears to be of Chinese decent who hasn't even been to China in two years over this.aggietony2010 said:Shanked Punt said:

Why don't you go rile up another thread instead of this one? No one really cares what you think after your completely laughable fail in your Brexit predictions.Shanked Punt said:

H5N1 is highly pathogenic for birds. Humans can contract it, but they need heavy exposure to the bird(s) alive or dead. Even then, it is not very common. It's not something I would personally be concerned about. Avian Influenza is everywhere and the Chinese appear to have handled this properly by culling the surrounding birdsfoleyt said:
