I was wondering the same thing. The traveler would have to self-report...especially since the flights from China are pretty much halted.

Singapore used to be part of Malaysia, was a British colonial seat for a century, and is populated by 60% ethnic Chinese, and has loads of people from all over Asia plus lots of American, Australian, New Zealand, and British Expats due to the roughly democratic government and English National language.

There is very much a Chinese cultural influence but it's also very British still in style of governance and aspects of culture. A westerner such as myself is quite comfortable there, but someone from China or India would be pretty comfortable too. In regards to food, you get choices from all the big international and regional chains, plus all the ethnic style markets, but generally speaking they have more or less western inspection regimens and standards, though it can get pretty sketchy in the canteens towards the poorer or more industrialized areas. The locals we worked with didn't seem too bothered and nobody was preparing anything truly weird anywhere. I think access to properly inspected, sourced, and properly maintained foodstuffs and an economy that is good enough to keep even the poorest from wanting to resort to questionable food safety keeps things pretty safe overall.

If you want to safely and easily dip your toe into a lot of Asia at one place on very easy terms, Singapore is a pretty good place to try.

It is brutally humid though. Relentlessly so, being basically on the equator.

On topic, Singapore will close itself up at the drop of a hat to preserve public health and order.

Also,

I am pretty darn sure the CDC just admitted they can't full test this thing yet.

Quote:

We have done virus isolation, but I want to be clear. The current test we have developed, at CDC , is not...we are not sure of the actual history of how the virus is isolated. You isolate it one day and three days later you can't. We are seen cases in the hospital, we are seeing case where people had detectable virus...and then they didn't have detectable virus...and three days later they had detectable virus. We are using the virus cultures now, more to learn about this virus.
All I am saying is that we have a lot of students from Wuhan...

That speculation is crazy, but since he was calling HIV last week when everyone else was talking about eating snakes, I'll consider it with a grain of salt.

If that is accurate, that would explain why the government tried to cover up the outbreak for a month and throw a huge Guinness record festival in Wuhan to infect as many people as possible (thinking it would make them more resilient). After they realized it was not working and killing people, they went into massive reaction and quarantined everything right before New Years.

How are you going to handle the influx of city people requesting to come stay with you if SHTF?

I've already had the conversation w one friend. Told her to find other accommodations if/when things go south. My family coming from the city get first dibs. It wasn't a good feeling.

Truth be told, I've got a list in my head of those that I will take their call and those that I won't. It makes me ill, but reality is finite/limited resources means tough decisions.

I had a conversation w another friend (married mid 30s) over a couple beers. When this virus thing was just getting rolling, I asked him what he do it a worst case. He admitted that w/o Uber eats he and his wife were screwed. Smart guy but zero common sense. Needless to say he's not on my invite list.

We have 1600 acres.. if they want to bring an rv and post up on the back 40 somewhere we have some room .. I don't think all "friends" would want to be in the middle of no where .. a few at best

My layman's understanding is that the main port of entry is CDRA 4 in the T cell.
Some people (mainly white northern Europeans) don't have it. Increases chance for other issues but blocks main route of entry.
There is another entry route through AD something that cannot be removed.

I'm only at a few hundred acres. But got plenty of food water and supplies. I'll take a couple fam in and some friends that I know would be productive in case of a fight or prolonged societal meltdown. Obviously if this thing were to go long enough I will need help going to "procure" more supplies.

Essentially I'm thinking a gang of sorts. Let's hope this thing peters out and nothing drastic has to happen.

Think of it as a CAD for a virus.

More specifically, it's a 3D model of the viral glycoproteins that shows how all the amino acid groups (residues) fold and attach to each other to form a protein structure.

Glycoproteins are what allow a virus to attach to and enter cells to infect. The figure shows a side by side view of these proteins for the Coronavirus and HIV, where you can see some groups that have a lot of similarity between the two.

Genetics Ph.D. here. As a disclaimer, I'm a little out of practice and virology/biophysics is not my area of expertise, so I'll defer to your expert assuming he's well qualified in this area.

Having said that, assuming the reasearch behind the paper is legit, I think it does raise legit questions about the origin of this virus, and I don't think the authors' conclusions are terribly off base. I would be very interested to know why your expert feels otherwise, other than his dislike of Biorxiv (which I'm not familiar with).

The methods behind their comparative analysis of RNA sequence and amino acid residues seem reasonable. Assuming they are correct that the amino acid residues in question are only present in this Coronavirus and HIV, then it should be highly unlikely for all 4 of them to be present in only this new Coronavirus as a natural occurrence.

While I'm not familiar with the specific challenges associated with using CRISPR or similar gene editing techniques on various viruses, I think it is reasonable to start questioning whether it may have been engineered.
